ChatGPT and Claude are transitioning from chatbots to interactive learning tools

This week, Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT were updated to support interactive display learning. Both of these steps show how AI is evolving from the early stages of a chatbot to something more mature and useful.

ChatGPT gains an interactive learning feature

On Tuesday, OpenAI released a blog post called “New ways to learn math and science with ChatGPT” that explains how users can “explore concepts through interactive visual explanations.”

Today, we’re making learning these concepts in ChatGPT even more engaging with new visual explanations. Starting with more than 70 core math and science concepts, ChatGPT will guide students by showing how formulas, variables, and relationships behave in real time. Now if someone asks ChatGPT for one main topic, it can define it and present an interactive view module. Users can adjust variables, apply formulas, and quickly see how those changes affect graphs and results—turning abstract equations into something they can directly test.

OpenAI highlights some technical areas of ChatGPT’s interactive learning feature:

Today, the list of math and science topics is very important for high school and college students, and includes topics such as the square of the binomial, Charles’ law, the area of a circle, the equation of a circle, compound interest, the area of a cone, the volume of a cone, Coulomb’s law, the volume of a cylinder, degrees of freedom, the difference of squares, exponential decay, Hooke’s law, lens’equation, lens’equation, lens’equation period-frequency relationship, potential energy, PV = nRT equation, Pythagorean theorem, slope intercept form, surface area of a circle, triangular area, trig angle sum identity, and more.

While OpenAI is starting with math and science, the company says it plans to expand to other subjects in the future.

Claude accepts visual responses

Meanwhile, Anthropic announced Thursday that Claude will no longer rely exclusively on text responses. Instead, the AI ​​chatbot learned how to create interactive charts, diagrams, and visualizations.

Last fall, we previewed Imagine Claude: Claude’s new way to create virtual objects in real time, without any code. We are now bringing a version of this feature, in beta, to Claude’s discussions. Claude can create custom charts, graphs and other visuals inline with his answers—then edit and refine the creations as the conversation progresses.

Anthropic says the new feature is enabled by default, and Claude will automatically decide when to use visual feedback.

Both chatbot updates show that both AI systems are growing and moving beyond the text-only interface that started the evolution of the modern language model.
