Google Wear OS 6: New features explained and what watches

Everything you need to know about upcoming software updates

After first revealing Wear OS 6 last May at its annual I/O conference, the latest update to Google’s operating system is now available for many Android smartwatches.

As before, the update promises a number of improvements to improve the user experience, battery life, and developer capabilities. So, if you’re wondering what this means for your current or future Wear OS watch, you’re in the right place.

This is your go-to source for everything you need to know about Wear OS 6, including its release schedule, key new features, and which devices can get the update.

Wear OS 6 updates: The story so far [March 2026]

THis software officially debuted with the official release of the Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2025 on July 29..

However, technically, this is Samsung’s latest One UI Watch skin. Wear OS 6 in its regular form wasn’t released until the Google Pixel Watch 4 arrived on October 9. The same skin started rolling out to owners of the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 (but not the OG Pixel Watch) last December.

We also saw users of older generations of the Galaxy Watch, including the Watch FE (in December), get to see the world of the Wear OS 6 update.

The last to receive the software will be the OnePlus Watch 2 and the OnePlus Watch 3. The brand has confirmed that these smart watches will receive an update in 2026, although a more specific timeline has not been given. We expect that to be finalized once the recently announced Oppo Watch X3 is re-released as the OnePlus Watch 4, likely in Q2.

Given that Mobvoi’s TicWatch devices seem to be on the way out, it feels right to take it out of the running for the Wear OS 6 update. And the latest—and one of the cheapest—devices to use the software is the Xiaomi Watch 5, which was announced in February 2026.

As usual with Google’s annual smartwatch software updates, Wear OS 6 isn’t a dramatic change. However, there are several significant improvements and new tools available to both users and developers, and it’s certainly much bigger than last year’s update from a design perspective.

1. Improved battery life

Improvements within the system are expected to provide up to a 10% increase in battery life compared to Wear OS 5.

2. ‘3 Clear Things‘ brings theming

The updated visual and dynamic design system introduces more personalization options, updated color schemes, typography, and shapes, allowing developers to improve their design skills.

Apps and tiles will be able to match their colors to the active watch face for a cohesive look—though this will only be available on Google watches at first.

3. Refined always-on display

Improvements to the always-on experience are on the way and may prove essential for quickly viewing information. In the update, the top task is always visible and in the ‘restart’ state when the device enters the system ambient mode.

4. Improved Tiles

Swipeable widgets in Wear OS will now automatically align with the system font and benefit from new features, including a 3-spaced layout for better visual consistency.

5. Smooth navigation and menus

New UI elements will allow developers to create fluid list navigation and scrolling.

6. Better media controls

Advanced controls for podcasts, including fast forward, rewind, playlist access, shuffle, favorite, and repeat functions.

7. The clock face is back

Third-party watch faces are usable too, as platforms like Facer now support ‘Watch Face Push’ and can sync instantly, eliminating the need to download a separate app for each face.

However, before that, Samsung started its release. When it announced that the Galaxy Watch Ultra would be getting its One UI Watch 8/Wear OS 6 update, the brand said in fine print that it would also be “gradually rolled out” to previous Galaxy Watch models.

Here’s the situation as of October 2025. We’ll continue to update this list as more devices begin to receive beta or full versions of Wear OS 6.
