Once you get the hang of it, though, the rotary dial is actually very satisfying to use. My only minor gripe? I was genuinely surprised. I chucked in a half-load of gym kit, and the timer automatically dropped from over two hours down to about 45 minutes. With energy bills in the UK being absolutely miserable right now, seeing a machine actively try to save electricity is a massive bonus.
I also tested the wool cycle with my favourite, slightly expensive jumper that I usually wash by hand. I was terrified of pulling out a jumper sized for a toddler, but it came out completely fine. Spot on.
The Steam Function: Magic or Myth?
AEG also makes a big fuss about their ProSteam technology, which uses steam to refresh clothes so you don’t have to iron them. Is it magic? No. If you put a severely crumpled linen shirt in there, it’s not going to come out looking professionally pressed.
But for shirts that have only been worn for a few hours in the office and just need a quick freshen up to remove creases and smells? It is brilliant. It has definitely saved me from getting the ironing board out of the cupboard a few times this month.
The Final Verdict
Look, at the end of the day, it’s a household appliance, not a miracle worker. But if you’re asking me whether the AEG upgrade was worth the money, I’d have to say yes. It runs incredibly quietly (I can actually hear the telly while it’s on a spin cycle now), it washes brilliantly, and the energy-saving tech is a genuine lifesaver right now.
