According to amazing events, Blizzard has added a new one Warcraft 3: Legacy this is an option Battle.net. It provides access to the original 1.29 client from The Frozen Throne period, and it is noted that it belongs to offline again LAN to play only.
To access the Legacy version, go to your Battle.net client’s Warcraft 3: Enhanced page. Click the menu above the game’s Play button and select Legacy 1.29.
Why is Warcraft 3: Legacy a big deal?
Before Blizzard completely redeemed itself with the amazing Diablo 2: Remake in 2021, it had a generational mistake with Warcraft 3: Reinvented in 2020.
I was one of the “lucky” ones who got to review Warcraft 3: Remastered almost six years ago, and it didn’t take long to see why the fan review-bombing of Metacritic users got so bad. 0.5 out of 10 (the game still sits at a 0.6 user score all these years later).
I gave the game 3/5 stars, which may, in retrospect, have been too kind. Warcraft 3: Reforged came with significant issues. The features weren’t there. Campaigns were changed. Character animation was difficult. The network was not working properly.
Worst of all? Blizzard overwrote the old Warcraft 3 client with the Reforged client, destroying a lot of custom games that were a big draw for many RTS enthusiasts.
If you wanted to play the old Warcraft 3, you had to do so with a workaround involving the versions of the beta branch.
Blizzard tried to salvage some of its work with the Reforged 2.0 patch a few years ago, but it failed miserably to revive the game’s appeal.
Is Warcraft 3: Legacy really what it seems?
I haven’t had a chance to jump into the new Legacy version of Warcraft 3 yet, but there’s a lot of chatter on the Blizzard forums about its status.
As one user, Kiezel, points out, there are still problems going on.
Some ask why Warcraft 3: Legacy download size 6.25GB where the original 1.27 patch was under 2GB.
Another user wonders why Blizzard didn’t use patch 1.31, which was also Reforged. Patch 1.31 was 64-bit and added several new features, while 1.29 is 32-bit. This does not include running on a Mac.
Windows Central takes over
I tend to agree with other Blizzard forum members that this looks more like fan service than a rehash of the old Warcraft 3.
Many of the same old problems that appeared after Reforged persist in Legacy, and it lacks online play.
Anyway, this could be the first step to update Warcraft 3 through “official” channels. I don’t think there would have been much of an outcry if Reforged had been completely forgotten, but I would be wrong.
What do you think about Blizzard’s move to add Warcraft 3: Legacy to Battle.net? Have you tried it yet? WHAT DO YOU THINK? Let me know in the comment section below!
