Sometimes it feels like Amazon is no longer a surefire way to save money when shopping online. Although there are a few strategies that can help deal with the problems of the store, the prices of the platform keep rising for users and sellers. As a result, many users have gone back to getting their things from specialized websites and physical stores like Home Depot (even if saving money at Home Depot is not always easy).

That said, it’s not possible to find other products on Amazon that are cheaper and better than what you can find at a home improvement retailer. We’ve found some Amazon options that surpass Ace Hardware in the past, and we’re going to give you a few that will put Home Depot’s massive inventory to shame.

When it comes to large goods, Amazon and Home Depot offer so much choice that it is impossible to compare the two completely, even when it comes to certain types of tools. Instead, we’re going to give you four solid products you can find on Amazon that beat Home Depot’s most popular alternatives in both price and quality.

Amazon Basics by Skil 4V Cordless Stick Screwdriver

Made by Skil and sold by Amazon Basics, this 4V Cordless Stick Screwdriver is a lightweight driver (10.6 ounces) that comes with nine standard bits you’ll ever use, and a small holder/extension. It has a compact body, measuring 1.4 x 1.4 x 7 inches, which is perfect if you need to work in tight spaces. The only potential downside of this tool is that the battery is non-replaceable, but according to over 3,000 excellent user reviews on Amazon, the battery lasts a long time and doesn’t seem to drain very quickly.

Of all the many popular cordless screwdrivers at Home Depot, the only one in the same category as Amazon Basics is the Ryobi USB Lithium Screwdriver Kit with a rotating head. But while the rotating head may be useful in certain situations, it is not really useful for the product to fit into small spaces, since the end of the screwdriver is too much. This product is also not as flexible as that of Skil and Amazon, as it does not have a torque control or a bit of extender, the latter being very useful when working in rough areas.

Speaking of price and specs, the Amazon model costs half as much as the $50 Ryobi, but there’s no clear winner for speed and power: The Amazon model has a faster speed of 300 RPM, while the Home Depot has a better torque of 55 in-lbs. Finally, Amazon Basics is the best choice, well, basic functions, with fast speed and a decent 22 torque of torque, at a very low price.

Roxon CM1349 Spark Multi Tool

Deep in Amazon’s list of many popular, affordable tools, you’ll find the Roxon Spark CM1349. A 14-in-1 multi-tool, the Spark is very much like a Swiss Army-style Knife for everyday use, and according to nearly 3,500 user reviews, it plays its role very well – there’s a reason why it’s one of our favorite cheap hand tools you can buy on Amazon. There are a million reasons why you might want a multi-tool: a one-stop solution for basic jobs in your garage, the finishing touch to that small tool set you found on Amazon, or a little promotional gift. This small, half-pound model includes a saw, can opener, prying stone, and whistle, making it a great choice as a small emergency tool for outdoor use.

Home Depot sells a wide variety of tools, including some that have multiple functions, some that are intended for outdoor use, and a number of inexpensive options under $30. There don’t seem to be any popular options that do all three of these things at the same time. The closest it gets is the DeWalt MT21 Multi-Tool, but even this model doesn’t have a flint and whistle, and the can opener shares space with the bottle opener. In other words, it’s not an outdoor emergency tool, so it doesn’t really compete in the same category as the Roxon Spark.

WorkPro Precision Screwdriver Kit 69-piece

Do you need 69 bits for your multi-bit screwdriver? Maybe not, but having a lot of bits never hurt anyone, especially if, as is the case with the WorkPro Precision Screwdriver Kit, you get a good case to keep everything in place. Also, the “pieces” in the product name are not just precision driver pieces but include an extension bar and a magnetizer/demagnetizer tool. The magnetizer alone sells for about $7 at Home Depot, while on Amazon, you can get this whole set for only $6.27.

There is no way Home Depot could compete with this price, even if they tried. The Anvil 36-piece Precision Repair Tool Kit is the closest it gets. At around $10, it’s not exactly cheap, but it’s close enough to be considered. However, going with the Home Depot option comes with a major drawback. Its cloth bag has been replaced by a plastic case that probably won’t last long, and no magnetizer tool is included. The bit count has dropped, too, from 60 to just 36. You could argue that Anvil is a popular brand, even if it’s not particularly famous, but WorkPro easily wins in name recognition, and it has an excellent warranty to boot.

Kitevich Telescoping Magnet Tool Set

This Kitevich four-pack magnetic pick-up tool set is almost identical to the kit that made it onto our list of useful gadgets for your garage, but a pick-up tool can always come in handy. With this kit, you have enough to spread around the house or store in a dedicated cabinet. And if the $10 price tag for all four of them sounds too good to be true, consider that magnets and metal rods aren’t that expensive. Sure, $2.50 each is a pretty good price, but it’s not suspiciously cheap to run away from.

This pack includes a portable, telescopic tool, a magnetic pick-up tool and a larger version of that same tool that can hold up to 10 pounds of metal, a flexible magnetic tool, and a long flexible tool with a hand crane type on the end of it. You just won’t find a bundle like this at Home Depot for the same price. You can get an almost identical set for $57, but frankly, three of the four items look exactly the same; they are simply too expensive. Alternatively, you can spend $9 for a single, good-looking camera called Powerbuilt that comes with an integrated light but a lower bulk load than Amazon’s option.

Let’s be honest, there’s no reason to go with Home Depot in this case. The only exception would be if you need something with a precise form, like a sturdy pick-up tool with wheels, or if you’re happy to spend money to print a big brand name on your cheap tools.

How to do it

This list is made entirely of Amazon products that are cheaper than the alternatives we found at Home Depot, while surpassing them in some area or another – strength, flexibility, portability, etc. We could not realistically compare this selection to every similar product sold by Home Depot, as there are too many, so we stuck to the most popular options for similar price and performance. We found these popular options by sorting Home Depot’s search page by “Top Sellers” and “Top Rated Products.” The Amazon products we selected had to have at least 100 reviews with a four-star rating, but most of those listed have more reviews with more than 4.5 stars.
