ChatGPT’s memory feature allows it to learn about you and remember your preferences over time. Memory provides ChatGPT with a useful context for native interactions that don’t need to be restarted every time. OpenAI has released new details on how ChatGPT’s memory feature is getting smarter and coming to users who are releasing it for the first time.
ChatGPT’s memory architecture is getting more and more advanced
First, OpenAI explains how ChatGPT’s “dreaming” feature that helps automatically fill memory gaps is being developed.
“Today we’re starting to release a more capable and scalable memory pooling system, developed to address the robustness, accuracy, and durability challenges we see when memory is used across hundreds of millions of users and multi-year periods in ChatGPT,” the company said.
Here’s how OpenAI claims to charge ChatGPT memory now:
Today, we present the most powerful and efficient memory architecture for computing built on Dream.
Memories compiled by dreaming are reviewed with their summary made visible on the memory summary page. In the memory summary, you can quickly pick up the highlights of what ChatGPT knows about you, add or update information about you, and provide instructions on what topics ChatGPT should display and when. If you want to go somewhere to learn more, just chat with the model.
The company’s detailed blog post includes a collection of examples that demonstrate the improvements they aim to achieve. This includes three areas of focus:
- Carrying forward a useful context.
- Following preferences and restrictions
- And staying informed over time.
You can read more about how these are improving with today’s memory development here.
OpenAI says Plus and Pro users in the US will start seeing the improved memory system starting today. The company is also doubling the memory storage capacity.
ChatGPT brings fantasy based memory to free users
Additionally, OpenAI says its in-memory implementation has improved enough since launch that it can now offer the feature to free users for the first time.
“While dream-based memory has been available to Plus and Pro users for a long time, we are now only able to offer Free users a version that meets our quality bar and is practical to use at scale,” said OpenAI.
“Recent improvements have reduced the computing required to run Dream for Free users by nearly 5x, making it possible to launch Dream for Free users in the coming weeks and increase memory capacity for Plus and Pro users.”
This means that free users will begin to see the same improved memory and context in ChatGPT as subscribers already enjoy.
