If Computex 2026 taught me one thing, it’s that monitor makers are no longer interested in building one-trick ponies. They want displays that can wear many hats, easily switching between work and play without forcing users to choose. Acer’s new Nitro XV345CKR P is perhaps the best example of that philosophy, and after spending time with it on the show floor, I came away impressed by its ambition while questioning whether MiniLED is really the future of gaming monitors.
I’ve always had a complicated relationship with MiniLED. For a large living room TV, it works wonders because you’re sitting a few feet away, and the local dimming spots blend in perfectly. Put the same technology on a monitor sitting about two feet from your face, however, and suddenly you’re no longer admiring the display, you’re examining the physics behind it.
Acer is trying to create one monitor that does it all
On paper, the Nitro XV345CKR P sounds too good to be true. It’s a 34-inch 1500R ultra-curved 5K WUHD (5120 x 2160) resolution, making it sharper than the UWQHD OLED ultrawides currently dominating the market. That extra resolution not only makes games look cleaner, but also results in noticeably sharper text and more workspace for coding, writing, spreadsheets, or video editing.
Then comes Acer’s big trick: Dynamic Frequency and Resolution (DFR). With the push of a button, the monitor can run at 5K and 180Hz for a single-player focused game or production, before switching to 2560 x 1080 at 360Hz for competitive titles where every frame counts. It’s an incredibly clever concept that feels like Acer is trying to replace both your creator’s monitor and your gaming monitor with a single display.

The MiniLED implementation itself is equally ambitious. Powered by 1,344 local dimming points and certified by DisplayHDR 1000, the monitor is incredibly bright and remains legible even under the harsh lighting of the Computex exhibition. More importantly, this isn’t just another edge-lit VA panel with a nice sticker slapped on the box. The dense local dimming range delivers the best HDR contrast and local contrast, making explosions, shows, and bright scenes look more impactful than they would on a standard LCD monitor.
The technology impressed me, but OLED still sits free in my head
While the hardware is great, using the Nitro XV345CKR P also reminded me why MiniLED and desktop monitors are always an interesting combination. Because you’re sitting next to the display, the limits of local dimming are much easier to see. During my demo, I could still see the bloom of bright objects against a dark background, and while black levels improved over a standard VA panel, they never reached the pixel-perfect darkness that OLED panels have set many enthusiasts to expect. That’s less of a criticism of Acer and more of a limitation of the technology itself.

At the same time, it’s important to give MiniLED the credit it deserves. Compared to an edge-lit VA monitor, this implementation is in another league entirely, delivering excellent brightness, strong HDR performance, and better spatial contrast. It also avoids one concern that continues to scare some consumers about OLED: burn-in. For users who spend all day staring at static toolbars, spreadsheets, or editing timelines before playing at night, that’s a real benefit.
In the end, I don’t think the Acer Nitro XV345CKR P is trying to tear down OLED, and that’s fine. Instead, it carves out its own space with a unique combination of razor-sharp 5K clarity, impressive HDR lighting, and the flexibility to switch between productivity and highly-refreshing games on a single display. Most enthusiasts may move on to OLED, but if the price is right, this ambitious MiniLED monitor proves there’s still a lot of room for innovation beyond the pixels it lights up.
