Apple’s long-rumored AirPods with built-in cameras may have a launch window. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is now eyeing late 2027 for the release of the camera-equipped AirPods, positioning them as one of the company’s first dedicated AI wearables.
The report follows a series of previous rumors that suggested Apple was developing AirPods with camera-like sensors that could provide visual information to its AI systems. Previous reports said the company was experimenting with infrared cameras and other sensors to help the earbuds better understand the user’s surroundings. Recent leaks have suggested that the project has progressed to advanced testing.
That’s actually what the camera-equipped AirPods can do
For those hearing about these AirPods for the first time, the cameras are not expected to work like traditional smartphone cameras. Instead, they will reportedly act as computer sensors, feeding Siri visual information and helping the assistant understand the user’s surroundings. According to Gurman, this will allow users to ask questions about nearby objects, places, and objects, effectively giving Siri a way to “see” the world around her.
For example, a user looking at the ingredients on the kitchen counter can ask Siri what food they can cook. Apple is reportedly testing features such as contextual reminders and navigation assistance that respond to the wearer’s surroundings. The earbuds are expected to be similar to the existing AirPods Pro models, with the main visual difference being the sensors embedded in the stems.
However, this will not be the first project of its kind. Experts at the University of Washington recently demonstrated the VueBuds, which were off-the-shelf wireless earbuds equipped with tiny cameras. Recently, a company called Ordo launched ear-hook style earbuds that also come equipped with a camera.
Apple’s AI ambitions are finally starting to make sense
Now that Apple has released a more powerful AI Siri with Apple Intelligence, these earbuds make even more sense. The enhanced assistant is designed to be more human, more context-aware, and able to understand information across applications and services. Camera-equipped AirPods would be a natural extension of that idea.
While competitors such as Meta are focusing on AI-powered smart glasses, Apple may be able to bring similar location awareness to a product category that already sells in high volumes. Instead of requiring users to wear glasses, Apple can use one of its most popular devices to deliver visual AI features.
Whether the feature works will depend on how it works in everyday life. But if Apple can make Siri a real help when interacting with the world around the user, the camera-equipped AirPods could be one of the company’s most ambitious projects in years.
