When Apple announced that Secure Home Video would finally support 4K in iOS 27, it felt like a definite improvement. However, after reading Apple’s recently published HomeKit Secure Video Compatibility guide, I don’t think 4K is the biggest issue. Instead, it looks like Apple has quietly redesigned almost every aspect of HomeKit Secure Video, introducing what sounds like an entirely new camera design for the next generation of smart cameras.
4K Is One Piece of the Puzzle
Native 4K recording is finally coming to HomeKit Secure Video, removing one of the platform’s biggest limitations. The new specification also introduces native support for 2K, higher HEVC bitrates and a new “High” video category, allowing compatible cameras to offer both 4K and 2K streams at the same time. Those improvements alone are important, but they’re only a small part of what Apple has changed.
Apple lists bitrates of up to 5 Mbps for 4K, 3 Mbps for 2K and 1.8 Mbps for 1080p. That’s important because better image quality isn’t just about resolution. The support for higher bitrates and HEVC should help preserve more details, especially in busy scenes with movement, low light or complex backgrounds.
Completely New Camera Layout
Reading through the specification, one thing quickly becomes clear: this is not just a document explaining how cameras should record in 4K. Apple has introduced a new set of services that include everything from camera and streaming capabilities to recording, security and buffer management.

Perhaps the most interesting change is how Apple now expects the cameras to be accurate. Rather than simply exposing video streams and moving events, cameras can now display detailed capabilities, multiple image sensors and different categories of video streams.
Apple has also introduced clear multi-sensor support, which allows cameras to report multiple sensor settings and identify which sensor is involved in a moving event. The specification even defines the sensor’s objectives such as The main thing again The packagesuggesting that Apple is preparing HomeKit Secure Video for more advanced camera hardware. Although the document does not explain how these sensors will appear within the Home app, it clearly shows that Apple is no longer designing HomeKit Secure Video with the assumption that every camera has a single image sensor.
Modern streaming
Another important addition is WebRTC alongside traditional RTP streaming. Compatible cameras are now expected to support multiple WebRTC and RTP sessions simultaneously, allowing several Apple devices to access live video at the same time. Although Apple doesn’t explain why it made this change, WebRTC has become the standard for low-latency, real-time communication and should provide a more modern foundation for future Apple Home devices.
New Pipeline Recording
Apple has also introduced a new recording structure. Dedicated services now exist for camera buffers, recording uploads and event queues, providing a more complex recording workflow than previous HomeKit Secure Video implementations.
The company isn’t saying these changes will improve reliability, but they should give producers more control over how recordings are handled. Whether that ultimately reduces missed recording events remains to be seen, but the basics are more advanced than ever.
Why Apple Says “Supported Cameras”
Looking back at WWDC, one detail now stands out. Apple didn’t just announce that HomeKit Secure Video is getting 4K. Instead, it said the feature will be available on it “supported cameras.”
After reading the description, those words feel very deliberate. Supporting 4K isn’t just about enabling high-resolution recording. Producers will need to use Apple’s updated HomeKit Secure Video architecture, including new streaming, recording and camera power services.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that existing cameras can’t be updated, but given the magnitude of the changes, I suspect that most manufacturers will retain full knowledge of future hardware rather than retooling all existing products. It’s also possible that some cheap cameras won’t have the necessary hardware to support everything in the new specification. Native 4K recording, multiple simultaneous video streams, WebRTC and redesigned recording architectures all place greater demands on the camera’s processor, memory and image processing pipeline.
What is clear, however, is not just the power to transform, its ways manufacturers will need to use this new feature completely. But the good news is that if the cameras cannot support the old design, then Apple still allows the HomeKit Secure Video spec and the old cameras will still work.
That could be another reason why Apple chose the phrase “supported cameras” at WWDC—because compatibility can depend as much on the hardware inside the camera as it does on the software it runs on.
What Does This Mean for Apple’s Rumored Camera?
One thing is becoming increasingly clear as I work on this document: Apple doesn’t seem to be building a platform for today’s cameras. It seems to be building the platform for the next generation.
That naturally raises questions about Apple’s smart home camera. While these specifications don’t prove those rumors to be true, they certainly provide the kind of modern camera framework you’d expect Apple to build before launching its hardware.
Time is also interesting. The new layout complements the Apple Intelligence camera features announced in iOS 27, including natural language search, smart notifications and rich event descriptions. When Apple releases its camera, it will likely be designed to take full advantage of these capabilities from day one.
Final thoughts
It’s easy to look at this specification and focus on one topic: 4K is finally coming to HomeKit Secure video. After reading all 37 pages, I actually think that is the most interesting part.
The real story is that Apple has quietly developed the entire HomeKit Secure Video platform. Between native 4K support, WebRTC, a redesigned recording pipeline, richer camera capabilities and more advanced hardware support, this feels less like a feature update and more like the foundation for the next generation of Apple Home cameras.
If it’s the way Apple takes it, the future of HomeKit Secure Video looks a lot more exciting than just high-definition recording.
