Apple will benefit from India’s decision to eliminate excise duty on a range of components used in smartphone production, a move that could lower costs for the company’s fast-growing India-based chain.
According to a report from Reutersthe Indian government ended tariffs of 7.5% and 5% that it had applied for hardware inputs for wireless charging, screens for cars and medical devices, and lithium-ion battery cells. The exemption is scheduled to remain in effect until March 31, 2029.
The release of the wireless charging component, in particular, feeds directly into the MagSafe ecosystem used throughout the iPhone system. With import costs for that hardware now removed, Apple’s assembly partners in India have a clear path to sourcing and manufacturing charging components locally rather than importing them.
Apple is leaning heavily on India as it works to move iPhone production away from China, with assembly partners now building nearly a quarter of all iPhones in the country and producing the entire iPhone 17 lineup there for the first time, including the high-end Pro and Pro Max models. Foxconn, one of Apple’s biggest suppliers, invested $1.5 billion in expanding its operations in India earlier this year, and Tata Electronics has grown to become a central manufacturing partner alongside it.
