This allows users to define and refine areas for more granular automation, for example to trigger lighting in certain parts of the room only, rather than treating the entire space as one.

In terms of connectivity, Presence Gen4 includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 LEagain Zigbee 3.0nearby The issue with Wi-Fi support. This combination should allow it to be integrated into a variety of ecosystems, including Apple Home by Matter, although like other Matter devices, functionality within Apple Home will depend on how the device class is exposed. Matter over WiFi is also a less popular option with many advanced users, due to the often higher power draw compared to Matter over Thread devices. Since this device uses a USB-C cable and adapter, that is not an issue, but it means that it is tied to places near stores, close to thickening with a visible, hanging cord.

The sensor also includes a basic ambient light sensor with multiple thresholds, including dark, twilight, and bright conditions. This enables integrated presence and light-based automation, such as turning on lights only when the room is full and below a certain light level.

Additional configuration options include adjustable sensitivity, transmission power, and filtering designed to ignore low-level motion, such as that caused by pets or robot vacuums. These controls are intended to reduce false positives, which can be a problem with more sensitive presence detection technologies.

Power is supplied via USB-C at 5V, and the device can be configured via the Shelly app, its cloud platform, or via a local web interface. Like other Shelly devices, local control is supported, which may appeal to users who want to avoid relying on cloud services.

While pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed, the Presence Gen4 appears to be positioned as a more advanced alternative to standard motion sensors, but it still has to contend with offerings from Aqara, Switchbot, and others.

Shelly it has details to come Presence Sensor Gen4a mmWave-based device designed to detect occupancy more accurately than conventional motion sensors, including when occupants are sitting still.
