Learn how to find your family members or friends at concerts, malls, markets, stadiums, and other crowded places using the Find My feature built into the Find My app on each other’s iPhones.<\/p>\n

Precision Finder is what you use to find your AirTags or AirPods charging case near you. Powered by Apple U1<\/strong> or U2<\/strong> Ultra Wideband space awareness chip.<\/p>\n

Like AirTags, when you use Precision Finding to find your friends and family, it shows you how far away they are and the direction in which to reach them.<\/p>\n

It can be a great way to find your family members, friends, or kids (as long as they have an iPhone) in crowded public places like food courts, playgrounds, and more.<\/p>\n

Note that Precision Finding works without Wi-Fi or cellular data, making it perfect for situations where you might not be able to call them to ask them where they are (but it won’t work if Airplane Mode is on or Bluetooth is off).<\/p>\n

Another important thing to remember is that the range is limited to about 196 meters (60 feet). For long distances, you’ll need to see a map in the Find My app to know where they are.<\/p>\n

Supported devices<\/h2>\n

Precision Finder to find your closest family members and friends only works on devices with the U2 chip. Both groups must have one of these iPhone models:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, or 15 Pro Max<\/li>\n
  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, or 16 Pro Max<\/li>\n
  • iPhone 17, 17 Pro, or 17 Pro Max<\/li>\n
  • iPhone Air<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Note that Precision Finding is not available in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Also in Japan, the second generation U2 chip has the performance of the first generation U1 chip, so you may not be able to find people using Precision Finding.<\/p>\n

    Use iPhone Precision Finding to find people<\/h2>\n

    1)<\/strong> Make sure your family member or friend has already shared their location with you. We have a separate tutorial that explains a few simple ways to do that.<\/p>\n

    2)<\/strong> Open the Get my app<\/strong> on your iPhone.<\/p>\n

    3)<\/strong> Go to People<\/strong> tab and select the person you want to find.<\/p>\n

    4)<\/strong> Tap that Find out<\/strong> button (this will only appear if the person is not too far away and within ~196 feet\/60 meter range).<\/p>\n

    5)<\/strong> Now you will see how far you are from this person. If someone is in range but your iPhone can’t establish a good connection, it will ask you to move to a different location.<\/p>\n

    Once connected, you will see arrows and written instructions asking you which way to go to find it.<\/p>\n

    \"Finding\"Finding<\/p>\n

    Make it easy for someone to find you<\/h2>\n

    When someone tries to find you using Precision Finding, a notification appears on the screen that says \u201cA person<\/em> trying to find you. Open Find My to see where it is a person<\/em> that’s right.” Tapping this alert can improve signal and range. And if you both share your space, this can help both of you get along, making the whole process easier and faster.<\/p>\n

    \"Someone\"Someone<\/p>\n

    If the “Find” button is grayed out and not available in the Find My iPhone app<\/h2>\n

    If the person you are trying to find is more than a few hundred feet away Find out<\/em> the button is replaced Directions<\/em>which when tapped, opens the Maps app. This is your clue that this person is out of Accuracy Detection range.<\/p>\n

    However, if the Find button is grayed out and says ‘Not available<\/strong>,’ that means someone is nearby, but their iPhone doesn’t support Precision Finding. This means they have an iPhone 14, 13, 12, or 11 (all with the U1 chip).<\/p>\n

    \"The\"The<\/p>\n

    And if they happen to have an iPhone XS, XR, X, or older, the Find out<\/em> the option will never appear to them, as these phones do not even have the first generation U1 Ultra Wideband chip.<\/p>\n

    The unavailability of the Find button may also indicate a problem, which you can solve by restarting either or both iPhones. If you happen to face this problem frequently, upgrade to the latest version of iOS.<\/p>\n
