Also, cloud storage is all the rage these days, offering convenience unmatched by any other option. However, traditional storage devices such as USB flash drives and SD cards remain very important for fast file transfer between devices. They are often used to back up small files.

Unlike hard drives that use mechanical components, both USB drives and SD memory cards rely on flash memory. This makes them more resistant to physical damage and more suitable for situations that require portability or a lot of movement – but this does not mean that they cannot wear and tear over time. Like all types of storage, USB drives and SD cards also have a limited lifespan. However, there is no fixed number attached to them as endurance depends on many factors.

The SD Association, which sets standards for memory cards, states that with normal use, current gen options should last at least 10 years. The lifespan of USB drives that use flash memory is similar, too. In theory, you shouldn’t have to worry about data loss or corruption if your storage device is well maintained and not exposed to extreme temperatures for years on end, but it helps to know what exactly is causing your USB drive or SD card to wear out.

How to measure flash memory life

<picture id="p07de6668b98bd5150b0c26d781860a82">

</picture>
                    Tatiana Rico/Getty Images

Unlike HDDs, which store data by magnetizing small areas on a rotating disk using a read/write head, flash storage uses floating gate transistors to hold electrical charges inside the memory cells. This makes them resistant to drops and magnets, but these memory cells gradually degrade over time. Endurance on flash storage devices such as USB drives and SD memory cards is measured in program and erase (P/E) cycles. The cycle is completed when the memory cell is filled with data and then completely erased. How long a flash drive lasts is also greatly influenced by the type of NAND flash used.

The SLC, or single-level NAND cell, offers much longer life but at the expense of capacity and affordability. Since it stores only one data per cell, the transfer speed is fast, and this type of NAND flash storage boasts endurance of 100,000 P/E cycles. You also have MLC (multi-level) and TLC (three-level cell) NAND options that feature 10,000 and 3,000 P/E cycles respectively. Most consumer-grade USB drives and memory cards use MLC or TLC NAND architecture.

Unfortunately, many manufacturers advertise their storage solutions with names like “Ultra” or “Extreme,” which sound very carefree. Brands like SanDisk specifically sell High Endurance SD cards designed to handle continuous operations such as continuous video recording by security cameras and dashcams.

Tips to make your storage drives last longer

<picture id="pc3be5b48cc658ae9c2e8dc32df27d310">

</picture>
                    Eza_Nanda/Shutterstock

Your computer’s RAM is very fast, but it also loses its data when you turn it off. SD cards and USB drives, on the other hand, are a non-volatile storage medium that stores information even without a continuous power supply. However, this does not mean that they are meant to hold on to your information forever. This is where data storage should also be considered when evaluating the lifespan of flash storage, and why you shouldn’t leave old SSDs unplugged for long periods of time. This is why USB drives and memory cards are generally not used as archive storage, despite anecdotal claims that they can hold data for several years.

Connecting your hard drive to a constant power source will help prevent data loss to some extent. Obviously, most of a USB drive’s life is spent being plugged in and out and tossed around, and that’s when external factors also start to play a big role in how long it lasts. Avoid leaving your SD cards or thumb drives in very cold or hot places. As with most electronics, humidity does not play well with storage devices.

Furthermore, if you’ve rolled your eyes at the “drive incorrectly ejected” warning before, you’re not alone. While removing USB drives without safely ejecting them is usually not a disaster, it risks corrupting the file directory which can leave chunks of your data unreadable.

        Andrei Berezovsky / Getty Images With the internal storage capacity of smartphones and laptops ever increasing, there is less reliance on external storage media by users.
