Here’s What You Should Know

When it comes to automotive reliability, Toyota is often ranked among the best – and there are several reasons why Toyota has earned this reputation. Although Toyota cars are not immune to problems, the popularity of this brand is due to the reliability of their old and new models, even when the miles accumulate. Many models of Toyota cars and trucks are known to last hundreds of thousands of miles – and sometimes over a million miles – without requiring major repairs or replacement parts.

That’s why new Toyotas often win when it comes to things like longevity, resale value, and total cost of ownership. But what about the used market? Used Toyotas, even those with high mileage, are always in high demand – even more so with today’s high new car prices. After all, shouldn’t all the things that make Toyotas buy such reasonable cars make them a better buy on the used market? This is where things get tricky, because that high resale value and reputation for reliability can be a double-edged sword when shopping for a smart used car. Let’s find out why.

Don’t just look at the badge

First, while Toyotas are generally reliable and inexpensive to maintain overall, this does not mean that they will never need repairs. Sure, the Toyota badge may give you peace of mind, but there are parts of the car that are likely to fail after a certain age and mileage, no matter how reliable it is. Even if the engines and their transmissions are strong, parts like catalytic converters, coil packs, O2 sensors, and various gaskets are common points of failure in older, long-mileage vehicles. Toyotas are not immune to these problems, which can sometimes be expensive to repair.

Because Toyota has a reputation in the community as being reliable, some Toyota dealership employees say that owners believe that their cars are invincible, which makes them neglect their cars. In my own experience, I have found that used Toyota dealers tend to dismiss important mechanical issues or broken parts by talking about Toyota’s supposedly bulletproof reputation.

This isn’t to say that older, high-end Toyotas can’t buy smart used cars. It’s just important to understand that long-distance vehicles will always have accidents, regardless of the badge on them. In most cases, you’ll learn more about a given car by talking to the seller, asking for maintenance records, and considering the car’s overall condition than by looking at the badge or the number on the odometer.

Sometimes new is better than used

The most important thing to consider when looking for a used, high-mileage Toyota — any used Toyota, really — is how much you can save on a lower mileage or brand new model. That high resale value Toyotas are known for? It’s great if you’re buying new, but the flip side is that used buyers pay more, and those higher prices often extend to cars with higher mileage. This is especially important if you are buying expensive used cars that may require financing.

As an example, let’s look at used, high-mileage Toyota Tacomas — a truck known for its reliability and resale value. At the time of writing, CarMax is asking $24,000 for a 2019 Tacoma SR with 125,000 miles. Sure, it might be reliable, but that’s a lot of money for a seven-year-old, base-model kid’s car with over 100,000 miles on it and no factory warranty.

In contrast, the new, next-generation Tacoma SR can be had for the low $30,000s after dealer rebates. Yes, it’s more expensive, but you get a new truck for a very small premium – and the new Tacoma should enjoy the same good resale value. This is the case with many popular Toyota models on the used market. Finally, while long trips shouldn’t scare you off when driving a used Toyota, it’s important not to pay too much for a worn-out, used car just because of the brand name.

When it comes to automotive reliability, Toyota is often ranked among the best – and there are several reasons why Toyota has earned this reputation.
