The first IC-130 Hercules entered service nearly 70 years ago, and the airframe has spawned a number of modern and specialized variants, including the MC-130J Commando II, which takes its name from the commando’s World War II transport history.

Developed by Lockheed Martin, the MC-130J Commando II is designed to perform air support missions in contested and enemy-held territory, including search and rescue (CSAR). At the end of fiscal year 2025, when the production of these aircraft is closed, the United States Air Force had 57 MC-130Js in service, each aircraft costs more than 100 million dollars.

During Operation Epic Fury in Iran, the American military began a dangerous mission to rescue an American pilot who had fallen behind enemy lines, involving two MC-130Js, among other vehicles. It sounds like the plot of an over-the-top 1980s action movie, but it’s all true. Although no American lives were lost during this CSAR mission, and the pilot was recovered safely, two MC-130Js were destroyed – not at the hands of enemy fire, but by deliberate, US military weapons.

Multipurpose aircraft

Perhaps because it’s a prop-piloted aircraft designed more for air transport than a sleek, powerful fighter or bomber, the venerable C-130 Hercules sometimes doesn’t get the recognition it deserves compared to other military aircraft. The horse of the sky, the C-130 has been manufactured in more than 70 different models, operating in 70 different countries around the world. Among the notable variants are the modern C-130J Super Hercules and the formidable AC-130 gun, sometimes called the Angel of Death.

The MC-130J Commando II is one of the most advanced and capable variants of the C-130, launched in 2011. The Commando II is designed for low-level infiltration and submersion, operating in direct support of special operations forces – usually under the cover of night. This includes not only transporting and supplying troops to combat zones, but also mid-air refueling of special operations helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft.

With more powerful and more efficient engines than previous C-130 models, the MC-130J can fly faster and higher, and is capable of taking off from short runways and temporary airfields. Due to increased computerization, it can work with a small staff of up to five. According to the United States Air Force, each MC-130J in the fleet had a unit cost of $114.2 million in fiscal year 2022.

More than just transportation

Although most of the MC-130J’s operations are performed at low altitudes, the aircraft can fly up to 28,000 feet, and its four six-bladed Rolls-Royce turboprop engines give it a top speed of 362 knots. Among the reasons for both are the MC-130J’s high cost and its strategic importance of high-tech avionics, payloads, fueling, and combat systems. Although the aircraft itself is based on a classic design, it is packed with modern equipment that is far more advanced than anything the original C-130s had back in the 1950s.

Likewise, while the C-130 may have been designed as a heavy-lift aircraft, it is far from the lumbering ship some might think it is. Airshow demonstrations have shown that the latest variant of the C-130 is capable of jaw-dropping aerobatic maneuvers with a skilled pilot at the controls.

The MC-130J Commando II made international headlines after the US military was forced to destroy two of its aircraft after they got stuck in the sand during a successful CSAR mission in Iran. Although expensive from a financial perspective, there was almost no reluctance to destroy an expensive aircraft if it meant preventing it from being captured by the enemy, to say nothing of supporting the unofficial US military credo of “no one is left behind.”

Andrew Harker/Shutterstock While the iconic Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bomber is widely recognized as one of the longest-serving military aircraft of all time, the C-130 Hercules is a similar classic design that is not only still in service, but still in production – albeit a highly modified version […]

[12

0":"post-12879","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-laptops-gear
["GET
