Apple recently scored a significant victory in its ongoing battle with Masimo over patents related to the Apple Watch’s blood oxygen feature. Here are the details.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n For the past few years, Apple and health technology company Masimo have been locked in a court battle over the Apple Watch’s blood oxygen sensor.<\/p>\n After many decisions and complaints, Apple had to close the technology on Apple Watches sold in the US to avoid the ban, and finally made a redesigned version of the feature, which transferred most of the process to the iPhone, using the data collected by the Apple Watch.<\/p>\n According to the International Trade Commission, that is enough to allow Apple to resell Apple Watch models with the feature enabled in the US, as the agency concluded that it did not infringe Masimo’s patents.<\/p>\n Naturally, Masimo disagreed and filed claims that Apple’s redesign still falls within the existing regulatory framework, while challenging the US Customs and Border Protection’s decision to approve the updated watches.<\/p>\n This led to two recent decisions, as we discussed here:<\/p>\n After those decisions, the final step was for the full Commission to decide whether to review the Administrative Law Judge’s ruling that there were no violations, which brings us today.<\/p>\n Earlier today, the ITC refused to review the previous decision today, effectively closing the case and rejecting Masimo’s request to reinstate the import ban on the Apple Watch.<\/p>\n From the decision, where ALJ refers to an administrative law judge, EID refers to an initial enforcement decision, and LEO refers to a limited eviction order:<\/p>\n On March 18, 2026, the ALJ issued an EID, which ultimately concluded that the defendant’s reformulation of the products did not infringe the folded claims of the Assured Patents. On March 25, 2026, Masimo and Apple each filed for review with the EID Commission.<\/p>\n On March 30, 2026, both parties filed responses to the respective complaints. The Commission decided not to review the EID. This consolidated proceeding is therefore conclusively terminated with the conclusion that the defendants’ redesigned products do not infringe the Assured Patents and, therefore, should not be issued pursuant to the terms of the LEO.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple said:<\/p>\n We thank ITC for its decision, which ensures that we can continue to provide this important health feature to our users. For more than six years, Masimo has waged a relentless legal campaign against Apple, and almost all of its claims have been rejected.
