If so, the MacBook Ultra is likely to be the highest-priced model at the top of the MacBook lineup, sitting above the MacBook Pro entirely.

So far, up to six new features have been rumored, including an OLED display, touch capabilities, Dynamic Island, M6 Pro and M6 Max chips made with TSMC’s advanced 2nm process, a slim design, and built-in cellular connectivity.

The exact launch time remains to be seen, but Gurman recently said that early 2027 now looks more likely than 2026 due to global memory chip shortages. Apple’s RAM supply is restricted, which could delay the launch.

Keep in mind that the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip is not expected to receive many of the changes listed below.

Apple last redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2021, when the M1 Pro and M1 Max models were launched, so the MacBook Ultra will represent the first major redesign in at least five years and is the model that many customers are waiting for.

Below, we recap the rumored features of the MacBook Ultra.

OLED display

Whether Apple uses the MacBook Pro or MacBook Ultra branding, it is widely expected that these will be the first MacBooks with OLED displays.

Current MacBook Pro models are equipped with LCD displays with mini-LED back light. The move to OLED technology will result in an improvement in image quality, due to rich colors and a high contrast ratio with true blacks.

All iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad Pro models sold by Apple today are already equipped with OLED displays, except for the refreshed models.

Touch screen

Not only will the MacBook Ultra move to OLED, but the display will apparently have touchscreen capability. This functionality will allow Mac users to use both their fingers as well as a keyboard and mouse/trackpad to input.

Steve Jobs said that the touch-screen Mac would cause arm fatigue, but he said that a long time ago, and Apple occasionally backtracks.

Dynamic Island

Another change related to the rumored display of the MacBook Ultra is a hole-punch camera, and this will make way for a Dynamic Island instead of a notch.

With Dynamic Island, the MacBook Ultra will be another step towards edge-to-edge displays with minimal bezels. Like on the iPhone, Dynamic Island will show things like low battery life warnings and AirPods connection indicators in the area around the camera in the middle part of the screen.

M6 Pro and M6 Max Chips

This is obvious, but the MacBook Ultra is expected to be powered by Apple’s M6 Pro and M6 Max chips in the next generation. Notably, these chips are expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2nm process, which should result in greater year-over-year performance and efficiency gains than usual.

The current M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are built with TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process.

Small Design

The MacBook Ultra is expected to have a slimmer design compared to the MacBook Pro.

Going from an LCD with mini-LED lighting to an OLED can contribute to a slimmer design, and there may be other changes that help slim things down.

As of now, there has been no indication that Apple plans to remove ports such as HDMI, MagSafe, or the SD card slot to achieve this slimmer design, but we’ll see. That was a very unpopular decision the last time it happened.

Mobile phone

Macs can already connect to a cellular network using the Personal Hotspot feature on a nearby iPhone or iPad, but Apple is reportedly at least considering built-in cellular connectivity for future Macs. If these plans move forward, the MacBook Ultra may be equipped with Apple’s C1X or C2 modem for future 5G and LTE.

While the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro were just updated with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips last month, major changes are reportedly on the way.
