It blurs the line between portable SSDs and USB flash-drives. Designed like a flash drive from 20 years ago, with a removable cap that hides its USB connector, it comes with capabilities more typical of portable SSDs than flash drives, and the performance that goes with them. The drive also comes with innovative features from the company’s LaCie Rugged family of durable portable storage devices.

The Seagate Ultra Compact SSD comes in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities—the most common capacities for portable SSDs. When you think about USB flash drives, even in the USB 3.2 class, you are looking at capacities like 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, with a range of 1 TB. This is why the drive fits the description of a portable SSD. In addition to this, the continuous write performance offered closely matches that of an SSD as opposed to a flash drive. In an era when businesses were handing out Windows 2 Go portable drives to employees, this would have been the right kind of product.

Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Seagate Ultra Compact SSD is that it does not have a USB Type-A interface, and instead offers a 10 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 type-C interface. There isn’t even a USB A-to-C adapter in the package. This, along with continuous write performance and high capacity solidifies its position as a portable SSD. Seagate refers to this as a “cable-free portable SSD.”

The Seagate Ultra Compact SSD is built into a solid aluminum alloy chassis that dissipates heat from its controller. This is enclosed in a removable silicone sleeve and a silicone cap that fits into the sleeve. The sleeve contributes to the drive’s 3-meter drop tolerance, as well as an IP54 rating for water- and dust-resistance.

Seagate sweetens the deal by offering three years of Seagate Rescue data recovery services. During this time, if you find that you have accidentally deleted or formatted your drive, you can send the drive to Seagate (free shipping both ways), and they will try to recover the data for you. You also get a six-month subscription to Dropbox Backup and Mylio Photos+, photo editing software.

Prices for all memory and storage products are haywire due to an industry-wide shortage of NAND flash chips. The Seagate Ultra Compact SSD 2 TB launched at US$179, but at the time of this review, it was found online for US$314, which is what we used in our running cost calculations.

Seagate Ultra Compact SSD 2 TB

Brand:

The Seagate

Model:

Ultra Compact SSD 2 TB (model: STMX2000400)

Power:

2000 GB

Controller:

Phison U32C (PS2251-17)

Flash:

Kioxia BiCS6 162-layer 3D TLC NAND
2x T28IGA5A1V

Dimensions:

70 × 20.4 × 12.5 mm (LxWxD)

Weight:

24 g (0.85 oz)

Interface:

USB 3.2 Gen 2, type-C, 10 Gbps

SSD interface:

A fully integrated single chip solution

Guarantee:

Three years

Price in Time
Updates:

$314

Introduction Seagate Ultra Compact SSD is a lovely portable storage solution from the house of Seagate, a titan in the storage industry.
