I don’t have much good to say. Pointer Mode sounds like a great idea in theory, but the implementation feels undercooked.

What surprises me the most is how much hype Samsung tried to build around this feature when they first announced it.

Now that I’ve used it for a few days, I can’t recommend it as a selling point for TV buyers, and I wouldn’t tell existing Samsung TV users to buy a Galaxy Watch with Pointer Mode.

What should Pointer Mode be? Why is it shrinking?

Pointer Mode offers another way to control your TV. It uses the sensors on your Galaxy Watch to move the pointer on the TV screen. You can use gestures like pinch to select, roll your fist to go back, or double roll to go home.

At first, it seemed like a decent accessibility feature, at least. It’s for people who can only use one arm to control their TVs and don’t want to rely on a remote control.

But then you see that scrolling still requires a second hand. In Pointer mode, scrolling is not done by pinching and dragging. That would be nice. However, the way it actually works is that you have to rotate the bezel on your Galaxy Watch, whether it’s the virtual bezel or the Classic bezel.

That alone weakens the argument for limited accessibility. And it’s not the only problem.

The main problems of Pointer mode

It is not a very accurate installation method. Pointer drift can happen, and you end up moving your arm too much to try to reset the pointer or control it.

It’s far from comfortable. Hold your hand in the air for a few minutes and fatigue sets in quickly. Remember, you have to move your entire arm to use Pointer Mode. It doesn’t work if you take your hand off your wrist – like you can with a virtual mouse.

Third party app support is poor. Poorly supported apps often reduce the Pointer Mode experience to an on-screen version of your TV remote’s pad to navigate menus.

Scrolling cannot really be done with one hand in most cases.

It’s even easier to use when you’re wearing your Galaxy Watch on your non-carrying hand.

Overall, Pointer Mode is a bug for me. For it to be truly useful, Samsung needs to put a lot of work into it. And honestly, I’m not sure the company will invest enough money in this feature to make it work to my standards.

Even if you don’t have your TV remote nearby, Samsung already offers better alternatives, including a virtual remote control for Galaxy phones and Galaxy watches with SmartThings.

Pointer Mode is one saving grace

While I’m not a fan of the current implementation, there is one situation where Pointer Mode actually adds value: browsing the web on your TV.

If you’ve ever tried to browse the Samsung Internet on your TV with a regular remote, or the SmartThings virtual remote, you already know how blurry it feels. Moving the on-screen cursor with the directional keys is frustrating, and basic navigation comes with a lot of friction.

Pointer Mode actually makes Samsung Internet easier to use if you don’t have a physical keyboard and mouse connected to your TV. In this particular case, even scrolling works better. You can move the cursor to the edge of the screen to scroll, so there’s no need to use your other hand to rotate the bezel on your watch.

If there’s a real reason to use Directory Mode, Samsung Internet might be it. Other than that, I’ll pass on this control method until Samsung improves it, if at all.

I had high hopes for Pointer Mode, especially seeing how confident Samsung seemed when it revealed it. But after trying it myself, I think the company has oversold this feature. Right now, Pointer Mode still needs a lot of work before it’s something I can recommend. And even if it is perfect, it can be very situational.

After One UI Tizen 9 crashed on my TV a few weeks ago, I finally got a chance to try out Samsung’s Pointer Mode with my Galaxy Watch 5.
