This feature is part of the iOS Messages app, where holding an iPhone up to your ear can automatically start playing or recording an audio message. The problem is that this feature is not well understood, and it is often implemented in situations where you do not hold the iPhone to your ear, which leads to random voice recordings and noise, sometimes personal or embarrassing situations. Some users may find the recording of voice messages to happen automatically when they exit a text message conversation or tap the back button in Messages, others may find it works seemingly randomly and they can’t determine any consistency as to why their iPhone is randomly recording them.

For some iPhone users who understand and use the Raise to Listen feature is useful and appropriate, but for others, it can be very confusing, frustrating, or offensive, especially if the iPhone is recording audio unexpectedly.

We will explain what happens, why the iPhone records audio and voice messages appear randomly, and how you can turn off this feature to fix the problem if you do not want to record audio again when using the Messages app.

What is to suggest listening on iPhone? Why is it randomly recording me?

Raise to Listen is a messaging feature designed to make audio messaging on the iPhone feel more natural, similar to using a walkie-talkie.

When enabled, by default, the iPhone tries to use the proximity sensor and motion detection to detect when the iPhone is held up to the ear, when it starts playing an audio message, or when it starts recording a new audio message.

The problem is that hold-to-listen is often inadvertently activated in Messages, when no one is trying to record audio at all. Sometimes it can be triggered by situations such as picking up the iPhone when a messaging conversation is active, moving the iPhone close to your face or something else, holding or moving the iPhone while multitasking or walking, or even using your iPhone as normal to enter and exit Messages conversations. Motion and proximity sensor features can be accidentally activated in many cases, which then start recording sound.

You’ll know you’ve activated the Raise to Listen audio recording feature because you may hear a recorded chime sound, you’ll see a small sound wavelength object appear on the screen, and the voice message interface suddenly activates. Then your audio recording is always ready to send to someone, whether you intended to record an audio message for them or not.

For users who are not familiar with this as a feature, it can give the impression that something is wrong with their iPhone, or that their iPhone is constantly listening to them, or that it is recording them randomly. Not the best idea or user experience, is it?

How to Disable Snooze on iPhone to Stop Accidentally Recording Messages

If you don’t regularly use the Raise to Talk and Raise to Listen feature, you can turn this off, which often solves the problem of accidentally recording audio in Messages altogether.

Open the Settings app on the iPhone

Go to Apps and go to “Messages”

Scroll down to the audio messages section and toggle the switch next to “Raise to Listen” to the OFF position.

Note that the setting is called “Raise to Listen”, not “Raise to Record Audio Message” or “Raise to Talk” or anything along those lines. These words alone cause a lot of confusion, as many people do not associate sound recording with listening, so this setting is ignored. But, if you read the fine print under the setting, you will see the explanation is correct and why this setting is the cause of recording audio messages by mistake:

“Lift to Listen allows you to quickly listen and respond to incoming audio messages by placing the phone to your ear.”

Therefore, turning off this feature will stop the iPhone from randomly recording audio messages when in a message conversation.

Now you can pick up your iPhone, shake it, put it to your ear or face, or anything else, and the iPhone will no longer start recording sound. Voice messages will no longer automatically play when you bring your iPhone to your face or ear, and that’s a necessary trade-off to prevent accidental audio recording.

If this feature is turned off, you can still manually record and listen to audio and voice messages as usual, but it must be activated directly rather than accidentally by touching or moving the iPhone.

Is iPhone Secretly Recording Me? Are Messages Listening to Me?

No. This feature does not secretly record or store audio in the background, it only records under the following conditions; Raise to listen is enabled (by default), voice recording gestures are enabled (by raising the iPhone or moving it in such a way that the iPhone interprets it as being raised to your ear), and the Messages app should be running again within the Messages conversation thread.

Simply turning off this feature will prevent this behavior, including the accidental recording of audio and voice messages.

Have you accidentally turned on voice messages with Raise to Listen?

This feature is useful for many users, until it is impossible, or even mysterious and often activated by accident. Have you ever accidentally turned on this feature and found that voice messages are recording when you didn’t want them to? If so, you are certainly not alone.

I personally have recorded a lot of erroneous audio messages in the last year alone, and I find this feature so annoying that I ended up turning it off on my iPhone, and I decided to write a post to address this, because many other friends and family have had the same complaints. The only solution is to disable Raise to Listen, which is buried in the Messages Settings, and is not specifically written in a way that the average person can find it on their own (to add to the confusion, a feature called Raise to Talk on the Apple Watch is available to activate Siri).

But it’s not just me, or you if you’ve ever faced this, the variation of this complaint started ten years ago, and there are probably hundreds of posts on the Apple Chat Support forums about this exact problem, with so many complaints that you can think that Apple might just turn off the feature automatically, if not to develop ways to prevent audio messages by mistake and voice recording.

This is one of those features that many people understand, but it’s often done by mistake by many other iPhone users. When it works as intended, it can make a voice message feel easier than before, but when it works unexpectedly, it can sound weird, weird, or confusing at best. Fortunately, turning off the setting only takes a moment, and will stop the random voice recording behavior entirely in Messages.

Are you using this feature? Did you open it by mistake? What do you think about this behavior on the iPhone?
