You may know it as a long-standing company that has been producing baby and children’s food since 1927. Another company – with the exact same spelling – has been around since 1939, almost as long. It produces a veritable smorgasbord of knives, multitools, camping gear, and cutting tools (think axes, machetes, saws, etc.).

Despite these two companies taking the same surname from their founders, Gerber Legendary Knives, which stands out from Swiss Army Knives, in both price and features have no business relationship or corporate connection with the baby food maker. Joe Gerber turned his ad agency in Portland, Oregon, into a kitchen knife company. He brought his sons, Pete and Hamu, into the fold and grew the company into an international outdoor brand.

In 1987, the Fiskars Group (based in Finland) bought the then privately held Gerber, and still owns it today. Fiskars, which specializes in outdoor products and consumer goods, has been around since 1649. Despite its overseas ownership, Gerber’s headquarters remain in Portland, Oregon, where it all began. While Gerber makes most of their knives in Portland, some brands and models are made overseas in China.

Most of Gerber’s premium products are made in the USA

<picture id="pdb473496e57a211d54417962e0a105f1">

</picture>
                    pio3/Shutterstock

Back in 1939, long before Gerber knives were legendary, Joe and Pete decided to send a few kitchen cutlery sets to some of their advertising clients as Christmas gifts, so they teamed up with local blacksmith David Murphy to make them. The knives turned out to be so good that New York City outfitters Abercrombie & Fitch – then best known for their large catalog of specialty hunting and fishing gear – decided to include them in their catalog.

Fiskars Group is one of the oldest companies in Finland and has an interesting story of its own. And they make a product for almost everyone even though they may not know its origin. Fiskars was founded in 1649, after Peter Thorwöste was given permission to set up a shop in Fiskars, Finland, to make metal and forged products. At the time, Finland was still under Swedish rule and was one of the largest steel suppliers in Europe. Fast forward three hundred years to 1967, it produced its first and now world famous orange plastic handle scissors. Today, Fiskars is a collection of lifestyle brands, including Waterford, Royal Copenhagen, Wedgwood, and others, available in more than 100 countries.

Gerber manufactures most of its premium, military-grade, hunting, and survival gear (including many cheaper and better tools than Leatherman) in Portland, Oregon. However, entry-level and mid-range models come from contract factories in China, enabling them to sell products at competitive prices overseas. The product line was once sold under the “Gerber International” label (made in Taiwan), but that is no longer the case.

        All You Need / Shutterstock The Gerber company name is well known in the United States, but for two very different reasons, which may confuse some.
