Is AI Ruining Restaurant Reviews?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What happens when people can’t tell real restaurant reviews from fake ones? The restaurant industry has begun to ask itself this question as a wave of fake AI reviews flood online sites. <\/p>\n

According to Yale professor Balazs Kovacs, people are already losing their ability to distinguish real from fake. Kovacs recently presented the results of a study showing AI’s ability to convincingly mimic human-written restaurant reviews. In his experiment, Kovacs gave Yelp reviews to the GPT-4 and then asked a panel of human test subjects if they could tell the difference. At first, the results produced by GPT-4 were too complete, so Kovacs then told GPT-4 to include \u201c<\/p>\n

While this raises obvious concerns about the authenticity of online reviews and the credibility of consumer-generated content, it should come as no surprise. Figure 01’s human-like speech was terrifying, but mostly because of how strange its conversation seemed. With typos and sub-par grammar\u2014in other words, what we see every day on social media\u2014it makes sense that AI-generated reviews seem human.<\/p>\n

One possible way to solve this problem of AI-generated updates is to use AI to detect and inform what is fake content, but early tests show that even AI cannot tell what is real and what is fake. Another proposal requires reviewers to purchase the product to review (such as having Amazon labels whose reviews are from verified consumers) and use it in restaurants. My guess is that this will be the best (and likely last) line of defense against the next wave of AI revisions.<\/p>\n

AI Food Art Is Everywhere (And Not For Freelancers)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first application of productive AI, as it applies to food, is the creation of images. Midjourney, DALL-E, and other tools allow us to create quick realistic images in a few sentences. As a result, we’ve seen CPGs, food technology software companies, and restaurant technology startups jump on the creative arts trend.<\/p>\n

While that’s not exactly good news for actual artists (this WSJ article is a must-read about the impact of AI on freelancers and creatives), these tools have democratized photography and art for people in the same way that Canva made professional-style graphics and presentations available to anyone.<\/p>\n

One company that has benefited the most is Innit. The company, which in its early life focused on hiring celebrity chefs like Tyler Florence and spent tens of thousands on photo shoots for a recipe, is now beating them to the punch with its Innit FoodLM generative AI.<\/p>\n

Although many Internet-savvy marketing types in food companies, restaurants, and other food-related businesses have at least learned to tap into AI manufacturing engineering, that hasn’t stopped others from trying to create a business with it. First, Al Michaels. Next, AI-Powered Anthony Bourdain?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The internet was shocked yesterday when news broke that Al Michaels had agreed to let AI copy his voice, and rightfully so. First, it’s amazing. Second, this is the main reason Hollywood writers and actors’ unions have continued to strike for so long, so I think the Hollywood creative community is very unhappy with Al. And finally, it will show you that if you throw enough money at us humans, the temptation to bow to the bots will be too great. <\/p>\n

My guess is that we will eventually see AI-generated avatars of famous chefs. All it would take is for Julia Child or Anthony Bourdain to get a good enough offer and it won’t be long before we hear (and maybe see) their avatars.<\/p>\n

Swallowing a Robot<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Venturebeat, Endiatx has created a small robot that can cross your body and is equipped with cameras, sensors, and wireless communication capabilities. The robot, called Pillbot, allows doctors to examine the gastrointestinal tract and is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.<\/p>\n

The company’s CEO, Torrey Smith, took 43 of these Pillbots and swallowed one live on stage, seen here. If this technology really works (and those pills can be made smaller because, holy cow, that’s a big pill to swallow), it’s not hard to imagine these being used to dial in and improve personal nutrition processes.<\/p>\n

Intermediate LLMs in Food and Nutrition Can Be an Immersive Opportunity<\/strong><\/p>\n

Business Insider asked some VCs what they’re bored of when it comes to AI and what they’re excited about. Not surprisingly, they talked a lot about how difficult it will be for startups to get into the models of big basic languages, where big players like Open AI and Google are playing. And like any good VC looking at the early stage market they speak for picks and shovels<\/p>\n

Even as investors focus their attention on promising AI infrastructure startups, there may still be opportunities for new LLM startups to win, especially when they are trained in specific industries, explains Kahini Shah, principal at Obvious Ventures.<\/em><\/p>\n

“We are excited about what we call Generative Science at Obvious, that is, large, multi-species models trained in fields such as biology, chemistry, materials,” he said.<\/em><\/p>\n

Brightseed’s Forager AI Discovers Novel Bioactives<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brightseed, a company that uses AI to accelerate the discovery of food compounds, has announced that it (in partnership with Ocean Spray) has used its Forager AI to uncover new bioactive compounds in cranberries. Forager has identified many bioactives, such as terpenes, which Brightseed believes have great potential for human health. These findings, based on in silico analysis, will be further validated clinically and will be presented at the American Society of Nutrition’s NUTRITION 2024 conference.<\/p>\n

This acceleration effect of new health compounds is another example of the acceleration effect of AI that I wrote about yesterday. Things are starting to move very quickly at all stages of the food value chain, which means that over time our basic understanding of the rules that underpin what we do (such as food product development) gives way to completely new rules that are largely rewritten by AI.<\/p>\n
