Affected models include the fēnix 8, Forerunner 970, Enduro 3, tactix 8 and D2 Mach 2 Pro, with users seeing the same update screen instead of the usual update options.

Garmin Express 7.29.0 fixes the problem

The fix appears in Garmin Express 7.29.0 for Windows. Users who were stuck with the problem are now reporting that their clocks are syncing again, map management opens fine and updates can be installed as expected.

The bug wasn’t that the Garmin Express failed to find the watch. That’s what made it so annoying. The watch appeared as connected, but the top review panel did not load correctly. Instead of showing software or map options, Garmin Express kept showing the usual command to update and check for updates.

That effectively blocked the traditional desktop way of managing maps. On watches like the fēnix 8 and tactix 8, that’s a big miss because maps are a big part of the tone. The owners were not dealing with an unclear setting. They were trying to use the main maintenance tool for expensive devices.

The problem seems to have started for many after firmware 21.39. Recent firmware versions haven’t fixed it for everyone, and Garmin Express 7.28.1 also failed to resolve it for affected users. Garmin Express 7.29.0 now looks like a release that actually fixes the Windows side of the problem.

It keeps asking to update…

The bug affected several newer Garmin models

Reports initially focused on the fēnix 8 series, which includes the AMOLED, Sapphire and Pro variants. Other models were also mentioned later, including the Forerunner 970, Enduro 3, tactix 8 and D2 Mach 2 Pro.

A few workarounds that have helped other people while waiting for a fix. One involves opening Garmin Express first, starting the map update flow, and only connecting the watch when the app asks. Others have used Map Manager directly on the watch via Wi-Fi.

Some users have also tried factory reset and hard reset without restoring settings from another Garmin watch. That worked for a few, but it was never a good solution. Resetting a high-end sports watch just to restore map access is a huge burden, especially for anyone with customized data screens, maps and activity profiles.

Update Garmin Express before trying anything else

Affected users should update Garmin Express for Windows to version 7.29.0 before doing anything drastic. That should be the first step if the app still shows the update screen instead of the usual map and software update panel.

Once Garmin Express has been updated, reconnect the watch and try to manage the map again. Hopefully, eventually it should restore the normal map and update the access.

Don’t miss the latest from gadgets and wearables

Subscribe to our monthly newsletter and check out our YouTube channel.

You can also follow Gadgets & Wearables on Google News and add it as a favorite source in Google search.

The post Garmin finally fixes map update bug affecting new premium watches appeared first on Gadgets & Wearables.

Garmin Express 7.29.0 for Windows appears to have fixed a bug that stopped some newer Garmin watches from properly accessing map and software updates.
