Nuclear power remains a controversial option, and the fallout from disasters like Chernobyl continues decades later, but it is a very effective solution. One average nuclear power plant can generate about 900 megawatts, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar are not without controversy, but you will also need a lot more to power the same number of homes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to John Parsons, deputy director of the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research, matching the output from an average nuclear reactor would mean building about 800 wind turbines. There are various things to consider, not the least of which is that when you open a nuclear power plant, it operates at capacity all the time. On the other hand, wind farms depend on external factors.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To build such a large wind farm, you would need 1,000 times more land than a nuclear reactor, if you measure the total size of the farm. A large part of that land is the space between each turbine, which could be used as farmland, but even if you only measure the area taken up by the turbines themselves, a wind farm would still take up 10 times the space of a nuclear reactor.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"news-article\">\n<h2 class=\"\">Researchers are trying to create more efficient wind turbines<\/h2>\n<div class=\"columns-holder \">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Wind and solar power are always greener than fossil fuels, almost all of their emissions are produced during the production process and the construction of power plants. However, land requirements and production costs to build these plants are still major limiting factors at present.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Researchers continue to work on ways to make wind and solar power more efficient, with one company in China currently developing unique wind turbines that fly above the ground rather than being built into it. According to the Chinese government-affiliated Global Times, the airborne wind turbine, which looks like a cross between a blimp and an animated rocket ship, successfully took its first flight in January 2026.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Operating 2,000 meters above ground level, the turbine is subject to stronger, more constant winds than a conventional land-based turbine. This powerful wind allows it to generate significantly more power, which is then transmitted through a cable anchored to the ground. Speaking to the Global Times, a researcher working on the project said that they think the turbine is used as a source of energy in remote areas, and &#8220;to complement[ing] traditional ground-based wind energy systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Data collected during the first flight suggested that the airborne turbine prototype could generate up to 3 megawatts of power. When it does arrive, its developers are reportedly planning to prioritize the Chinese market first, so it&#8217;s safe to assume that the rest of the world won&#8217;t be generating power using floating wind turbines anytime soon. Thankfully, that&#8217;s not the only way researchers are trying to make wind turbines more efficient.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Another development that has already taken place in America is the introduction of increasingly advanced wind turbines. A large wind turbine has the potential to produce much more power, and wind turbines built in the 2020s are already larger on average than turbines built in previous decades.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This increase in size is expected to continue, as offshore wind turbines are expected to reach an average height of 500 feet by 2035, up from approximately 330 feet in 2016. Each new wind turbine by 2035 is expected to produce nearly 3 times as much energy as its 20-year-old predecessor. A small number of large turbines takes up less space than a large number of small wind turbines, and makes it cheaper to produce the same amount of power.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It turns out that wind farms may have unexpected environmental benefits as well.
