The release includes NFC-based authentication, a new Joint Fabric approach for multi-manager support, smart thermostat controls and several small improvements aimed at improving interoperability across ecosystems.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-8\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>NFC-Based Device Setup<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-9\">One of the biggest additions to Matter 1.6 is NFC-based authentication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-10\">Previously, Matter devices could store setup information on an NFC tag, but the actual authentication process still relies on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). With Matter 1.6, the entire authentication process is now possible via NFC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-11\">This is especially useful for devices that are difficult to access once installed, such as ceiling lights, in-wall switches and other permanently installed equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-12\">For example, a smart bulb can now be activated before it is installed in a ceiling fixture, while a switch in the wall can be configured before the mains power is connected. In a large installation, multiple devices can be preconfigured and operational once installed in their storage locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-13\">For consumers, the process is simple. Hold the compatible phone close to the phone and finish using it before plugging it in.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-14\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Integrated Fabric Expands Support for Multiple Managers<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-15\">Matter 1.6 also introduces a new multi-controller feature called Joint Fabric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-16\">Current Matter multi-admin functionality allows devices to be shared between different ecosystem fabrics. For example, a device can be shared between Apple Home, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings while each platform maintains its own independent Matter fabric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-17\">Joint Fabric takes a different approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-18\">Instead of multiple separate fabrics, multiple authorized controllers share a single Matter fabric with a central data store. Devices added to that shared fabric are automatically available to all participating administrators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-19\">According to the CSA, this can be useful in situations such as:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-20\">\u2022 Homes using multiple smart home platforms<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-21\">\u2022 Dedication of new buildings<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-22\">\u2022 Professionally managed rental properties<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-23\">\u2022 Commercial shipping<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-24\">Controllers can be added or removed without affecting the devices themselves, and the Shared Fabric only counts as one fabric per device, leaving room for additional native Matter fabrics if needed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-25\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Thermostat suggestions<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-26\">Matter 1.6 introduces a new feature called Thermostat Suggestions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-27\">Traditionally, smart home platforms send direct commands to thermostats. The thermostat receives the command and acts on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-28\">With Thermostat Suggestions, forums can post recommendations. The thermostat then determines whether the recommendation should be implemented based on the user&#8217;s preferences, existing schedules, demand response systems, environmental conditions and recent repairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-29\">For example, if the user changes the temperature manually and another platform tries to adjust it quickly, the thermostat can decide that the new command may not match the user&#8217;s intentions and ignore it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-30\">If the proposal is rejected, the thermostat can provide a default definition to the requesting location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-31\">The goal is to reduce friction between multiple smart home platforms and services while keeping the thermostat in line with the user&#8217;s preferences.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-32\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Additional Developments<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-33\">Matter 1.6 also includes a few enhancements.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-34\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Device power reporting<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-35\">Devices can now communicate their capabilities and performance limitations in a more sophisticated way, allowing ecosystems to more accurately represent them.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-36\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Security Sensor Event History<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-37\">Security sensors can provide information about past events, giving platforms access to both current status and historical activity.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-38\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Status<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-39\">Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms can now indicate when they have been removed from their installation, helping fields identify potentially obsolete devices.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-40\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Enhanced Certificate Revocation List<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-41\">Security-related certificate revocation lists can now be managed in smaller chunks instead of one large database, improving scalability as the number of Matter-certified devices continues to grow.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-42\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Availability<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-43\">Matter 1.6 is now available for developers and platform developers. As with previous releases of Matter, support will depend on individual vendors implementing new features in their products and ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-44\">There is currently no timeline for when certain features of Matter 1.6 will appear in consumer products.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1 ai-optimize-44\">My Take<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-45\">While Joint Fabric is one of the more interesting additions in Matter 1.6, I&#8217;d be surprised if it gets traction quickly. It requires ecosystem providers to relinquish control in favor of a more open smart home experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1 ai-optimize-46\">For Apple Home users, there is also a question of support. Despite Matter 1.5 being available for some time, there was little evidence at WWDC 2026 that Apple has fully embraced its many new capabilities.
