Clearing the Pixel Launcher cache produced mixed results.

If you’ve recently upgraded your Pixel to Android 17 and your screen is showing strange behavior, you’re not the only one with this problem. For first-timers, a frustrating new bug is breaking the core of the smartphone experience: its touchscreen.

Owners are reporting on Reddit some of the weird input issues, where their phones just ignore taps or misinterpret basic swipes, as spotted by Android Authority. Swipe up to scroll down your social feed, and your operating system may return you to the top of the page.

The chaos is the result of a larger, more stable release of Android 17. While major OS upgrades are usually shipped with few development issues — reports have already documented a frustrating 5G issue and a task profile bug that makes home screen widgets disappear entirely — a broken touchscreen is a kettle of fish. You can get around Wi-Fi drops with mobile data, but you can’t navigate a screen that doesn’t see your thumb.

Latest Videos Appearing

All modern Pixel systems are affected

The issue has already been reported on Google’s IssueTracker, and based on a few Reddit threads, it affects the entire modern system. Users say the Pixel 10, 9, 8, and 7 series are affected. The bug doesn’t discriminate by app, either; these distorted inputs and dead zones occur anywhere in the system UI.

Google is aware of this problem. The official PixelCommunity account on Reddit recently chimed in with a suggested troubleshooting step: go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Pixel Launcher app > Storage & cache > Clear cache. However, a few users responded that this fix did nothing to restore normal touch responses.

            You might like it

If Google’s method doesn’t work, some users have found success by going into their device’s settings and turning off the “Smooth Display” feature. Interestingly, at least one owner found that turning off Smooth Display turned it back on and fixed the jerky scrolling. Keep in mind that this fix has a varying success rate, but if you’re currently having trouble with scrolling directions while reading email, you should try it.

Google does not commit to a firm timeline for a permanent software patch at this time. If you’re on last year’s plan and haven’t downloaded Android 17 yet, stop at that install button. I think one “benefit” of this mess is that Google is kindly forcing us to release anonymous digital poison.
