Need to install Java on your Mac to run a specific program? Although most Mac users will never need Java, there are certain applications, development tools, business software, and utilities that still require the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) to function properly. You can find this when you go to open the application, and you may see a message about needing Java, or needing a Java Virtual Machine. <\/p>\n

If you’ve launched an application and received a message saying Java is required, or you’re programming software that depends on Java, installing a modern JDK\/JRE is often the easiest solution. One of the best options available today is called Eclipse Adoptium\u2060, which is a free, open source distribution of OpenJDK that is widely used on MacOS, Windows, and Linux, but obviously we’re focusing on Mac here.<\/p>\n

Why do I need Java on my Mac?<\/h2>\n

Apple no longer ships with Java installed on MacOS. Nevertheless, a fair number of applications still rely on Java to function properly, or at all. <\/p>\n

Surprising numbers of applications continue to use Java, whether it’s legacy business software, commercial software, scientific and engineering tools, analytical tools, educational applications, Minecraft servers and mods, some cross-platform games and simulators, development environments, database management and administration tools, network services, and much more. <\/p>\n

You will know you need Java because the application may refuse to install or launch until the JRE\/JDK is successfully installed. The JRE component, BTW JRE stands for Java Runtime Environment, is the most important one here to run applications. <\/p>\n

How to install Java on MacOS Tahoe 26, MacOS Golden Gate 27 with Eclipse Temurin OpenJDK<\/h2>\n

  1. Go to the Adoptium download page and download the installer\n<\/li>\n
  2. Run the Adoptium installer to install the JRE\/JDK on your Mac<\/li>\n

  3. After the installation is complete, you can verify that Java has been installed successfully by going to Terminal and entering:<\/li>\n

    java --version<\/code>
    You should see the OpenJDK version you just installed, which might look something like this:

  4. Restart Mac*<\/li>\n
  5. If the application requires Java\/JRE\/JDK to run, try again and the application should launch as expected<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    *You don’t always have to restart your Mac for all applications to work properly, but if you try to open an application and have difficulty finding Java after installing it, try restarting your Mac.<\/p>\n

    Although generally any version of Java will do, some applications are preferred and require a specific version of Java. Eclipse Adoptium supports multiple versions to coexist, so if you need Java 8 and Java 17, for example, you can have both.<\/p>\n

    Most Mac users won’t need Java, JRE, or JDK, but if you run into a situation where a specific application requires it, then installing a modern OpenJDK distribution is usually a quick solution. Whether you know you need it ahead of time, or you open an application and encounter a Java required error message, now you know what to do to get things moving. <\/p>\n

    Why Eclipse Temurin over Oracle Java?<\/h3>\n

    There are various reasons for this, but one of the most compelling aspects is due to the change of license from Oracle taking Oracle Java to a paid license model, while Eclipse Temurin remains free for any use including commercial production.<\/p>\n
