With Apple’s discontinuation of the Pro Display XDR earlier this year, Mac users looking for a large, high-resolution display have found themselves with a few options on the market. Apple’s current display lineup now includes the 27-inch Studio Display and Studio Display XDR, both of which offer excellent image quality and tight macOS integration, but they also don’t offer the larger 32-inch form factor that some users prefer.<\/p>\n

LG’s UltraFine 6K display (32U990A) helps fill that void. The display, which was revealed back in January 2025 but didn’t launch until last October, features a 32-inch 6K Nano IPS Black panel, a Thunderbolt 5 connection, and a design that feels more Apple-inspired than previous UltraFine displays. After using it for a few weeks in my everyday setup, I found it to be a compelling way to display Apple itself, albeit with a few tradeoffs.<\/p>\n

The first thing that stands out about the UltraFine 6K is how much real estate it provides. Compared to Apple’s 27-inch displays and my trusty 27-inch UltraFine 5K displays that have graced my workspace for nearly a decade, the extra screen real estate is immediately noticeable. Most apps can sit next to large windows without feeling cramped to support my typical “command center” view of our editing tasks, while creative apps that require a canvas all benefit from more room for toolbars and timelines.<\/p>\n

Unlike most large displays, the UltraFine 6K doesn’t compromise on sharpness. The 6,144 x 3,456 resolution delivers a true Retina experience, with crisp text and interface elements sized just right for standard viewing distances. That’s one of the biggest advantages the display has over most monitors in this size category that only deliver 4K resolution. While those displays can often produce a similarly sized desktop, the result is sometimes a little less sharp while the UltraFine 6K feels completely native due to its higher pixel density.<\/p>\n

The UltraFine 6K is also compatible with Apple’s latest Macs thanks to the support for Thunderbolt 5. Using a MacBook Pro, a single cable handles display output, charging, and connected accessories, and you can even connect multiple displays with a single connection. DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, and non-Thunderbolt USB-C ports on the display provide additional connectivity options, along with support for a lower Thunderbolt 5 port to support a daisy-chain configuration and upper USB-C ports for hub operation.<\/p>\n

LG includes up to 96 watts of power delivery to the display, which easily keeps the 16-inch MacBook Pro charged all day and recharges it quickly when you plug in the display.<\/p>\n

Day-to-day reliability was excellent during testing. The monitor has been waking up from sleep without a problem, the display scaling options appeared well in macOS, and there are no connection issues that sometimes affect third-party displays. While that may sound like a minor detail, seamless performance remains one of the most important qualities of a monitor that is primarily aimed at Mac users.<\/p>\n

LG has also made major advances in the manufacturing of its UltraFine system. Previous UltraFine displays were known for their Mac compatibility, but often looked more utilitarian than premium. The 32U990A adopts a clean design with thin bezels and a sleeker rear enclosure that doesn’t look like the outside of a Mac Studio or MacBook Pro. A wide foot provides stability, as does a wide straight stand arm with an invisible silver front but another black plastic with blue ribs on the back to provide visual interest if the display is used in a position where the rear is visible.<\/p>\n

Ports and a joystick button to control the display settings are hidden behind the display, and there is no annoying LED that pulls to light up a dark bedroom when the display is asleep.<\/p>\n

The included stand offers height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustments, providing more flexibility than Apple’s standard display settings to help you get the display in the right ergonomic position.<\/p>\n

The picture quality is very good. Colors appear vibrant and accurate, and the Nano IPS Black panel provides strong contrast. And certainly the 6K resolution provides the clarity and clarity that many users are looking for.<\/p>\n

The matte finish does a good job of reducing glare, especially in bright areas or near windows. Apple’s glossy displays still offer a bright look, but the tradeoff may be worth it for users working in rooms with significant ambient light.<\/p>\n

LG is touting the UltraFine 6K’s ability to work with macOS keyboard shortcuts for brightness and volume adjustments, though it’s not fully baked into the macOS experience. Unlike my old UltraFine 5K displays that were completely integrated into the macOS functionality built into these shortcuts, the UltraFine 6K requires a separate LG Switch app to enable these keyboard shortcuts and is different from macOS-level adjustments when using the same keys, which makes things less efficient than I would like them to be. Simply put, things can be easier if you use multiple displays and audio output options.<\/p>\n

There are a few other areas where Apple displays continue to hold an advantage. Studio Display XDR delivers brighter HDR highlights and more impressive overall performance, thanks to its advanced backlight technology. Users who work a lot with HDR video content will still benefit from Apple’s superior display. UltraFine 6K is also limited to a 60Hz refresh rate. For productivity work, that’s not much of a concern, but users who spend most of their day on ProMotion-equipped Macs may notice a difference when scrolling or performing other actions that result in rapid screen movement.<\/p>\n

Those limitations feel small, however, when viewed in the context of the rest of the UltraFine 6K package, especially considering the price difference compared to the Studio Display XDR. The main complaint of the UltraFine 6K is not the HDR performance or the refresh rate. It’s a combination of a large 32-inch panel, Retina resolution, Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, and strong Mac compatibility.<\/p>\n

The UltraFine 6K delivers the sharpness and ease of use that Apple users have come to expect, while providing more screen real estate than Apple’s current display lineup. The result is a display that feels close to being purpose-built for Mac users, and stands out as one of the most robust monitor options currently available for the Mac. The LG UltraFine 6K 32U990A is normally priced at $1,999.99, but LG is currently offering a $700 savings on the display, bringing it down to $1,299.99.<\/p>\n
