When smartphones took off, I couldn’t help but wonder if one day we’d be carrying full-fledged MMORPGs (Multiplayer Online Role-playing Games) in our pockets.

In my heyday, I thought of games like Eve Online, World of Warcraft, and Team Wars to make a jump. I knew it wasn’t real at the time, but it was nice to dream.

Those ports never came as I was heavily invested in mobile gaming. As the years passed, I moved away from PC MMORPGs again, eventually trading long online sessions for a comfortable night on my Samsung Neo QLED TV and a console with a controller in hand. So, at least some things are changing.

Then, suddenly, one of those old dreams really came true. Something happened last month that filled me with nostalgia for a few days and renewed my interest in one of those old internet games:

Developer ArenaNet has been released Guild Wars Renewed on Android and iOS.

The same game running on PC, connecting to the same servers with the same players and guilds. Time to dust myself off Team Wars account!

NOTE: I know that Eve Echoes brought a reinterpretation of Eve Online to mobile a few years ago. I enjoyed it for a while, but it wasn’t the same as the PC version.

Where does the Galaxy Z Fold fit in? Team Wars It has been updated?

I’m still rocking the Galaxy S24+, naturally, that’s the device I was playing with Guild Wars Renewed for Android was launched last month.

It’s been a few years since I last played Team Warsso I can’t say much about the game itself. All I can say is that the port feels extremely faithful to the PC version that I remember.

Unfortunately, it also pushes my Galaxy S24+ harder than any Android game I’ve ever played on my Samsung phone. It’s so hot that it’s really uncomfortable to hold after a while. That’s actually the biggest problem I have with the game right now.

Whether that’s something ArenaNet can’t improve or the cost of pushing a classic PC MMORPG to a phone, I don’t know.

Regardless, I stopped playing because of the heat, but I kept trying. I know that tablets are a safe bet as they dissipate heat much better than phones. However, I no longer have a Galaxy Tab S7 FE or anything new. Besides, I prefer to play Team Wars for something in the pocket.

That’s when it occurred to me that this might be the kind of foldable phone that adapts best to the best.

The Fold would be the perfect phone for games like this

Which phone-tablet hybrid should you buy? Definitely the Galaxy Z Fold 7, so that’s what I tried next. My colleague Abhijeet and I ran Team Wars on his Galaxy Z Fold 7, and the experience was completely different.

Not only did the phone stay noticeably cooler than my Galaxy S24+, but only the part containing the SoC got warm. And because the frame is split in two by a hinge, heat doesn’t transfer easily from one side to the other.

In other words, you can hold the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with a cool half in open landscape mode and play comfortably even in the most intense moments.

The Fold display is also a surprisingly good sport Team Wars. The original PC game was designed when 4:3 monitors were the norm, so the Fold’s squarer aspect ratio feels almost made for it. The larger display also leaves more room for touch controls, which means my thumbs spend less time covering the action.

That realization hit me hard. I already liked the Galaxy Z Fold series, but I never expected an old MMORPG like it Team Wars to be another reason I wanted.

Between the improved cooling and the square display, it feels like the perfect phone for this particular game. And maybe that’s true of more than just that Team Wars. Some older PC ports can benefit from the Fold design.

Will I really change? The more I think about it, the more tempted I am to finally do it, especially now that the even wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 is on the way.

I won’t be in a hurry though, as the Folds seem too expensive to me. But I want the Fold more now, even if, surprisingly, it’s for the better Guild Wars Renewed experience.

I’ve always loved the idea of classic PC games making the jump to mobile.
