However, the expiry date of the phone is set by the manufacturer even before the handset is produced. It’s officially called the end-of-life date, and it turns out it has nothing to do with how long the battery lasts or the condition of the screen. In fact, it has more to do with software, especially when a company stops providing security updates. If that happens, your phone will still work, of course – it’s just that it becomes a much easier target for bad actors.

That may sound alarming, especially when you’re talking about Android. Since Android is a broad ecosystem of products involving dozens of manufacturers, it’s hard to pin down a universal rulebook, like the kind Apple has for the iPhone. Although Google writes the operating system, it’s the brand that makes the call that determines how often updates arrive, and they vary widely.

Take Google and Samsung, for example. Both sit at the higher end of the spectrum, promising seven years of updates for their new flagships. OnePlus also offers six years of patches on its flagships now, like the OnePlus 15. Although things have improved over the years, a few less popular brands still offer less than that. It can be a confusing picture, but thankfully, there are ways to find out the end of life date of your particular phone.

How to check if your phone has hit EOL

If you want to know if your phone has reached the update cutoff, you can check the last time it received an update. If it’s been a year since it was last protected, there’s a good chance it’s past its expiration date. You can verify this by navigating to Settings > About phone > Software information > Android security patch status.

However, the most reliable way is to go directly to the source, as many manufacturers publish this information themselves. Google maintains a Pixel support page detailing how old each model gets, as does Motorola, with a software update tracker. Similarly, Samsung does the same on its mobile security site, and OnePlus lists its update program. You can Google similar pages for other manufacturers. Alternatively, you can check the status of your phone on an online database such as endoflife.date. This is a stable source that maintains update times for many brands and models. You can find the full model name and number in your phone’s settings under About phone. Then, search in the Devices tab for endoflife.date.

Rarely, the manufacturer releases updates past the phone’s expiration date. Samsung did just that in 2022 when it pushed a fix for GPS stability to a large wave of long-retired phones. This includes the Galaxy S8, which was launched in 2017 and had passed the end of its life. However, cases like this are not the exception, not the norm.

Why the expiration date should be taken seriously

<picture id="p2ffc869c65b259f06a678c62fd6e455d">

</picture>
                    Bangla press/Shutterstock

The thing is that beyond a few major manufacturers, most other Android phones are playing catch-up in terms of software support. For example, many Motorola phones, including even the expensive Edge models, are still covered by three updates. Some names, like Nokia’s HMD, don’t go beyond a few upgrades (even if they promise a few more years of security patches).

Remember that your phone uses two different clocks. The first includes Android version updates, such as the latest Android 17 update. Getting the latest update ensures that your phone is loaded with the latest features. But losing support doesn’t really break anything. Your apps will still work, including things like Google Pay and the Google Play Store. Maybe another five years or so down the line, you might encounter an app that fails to install or launch, but that’s rare.

The second watch includes security patches, and is actually very important because it connects bugs in the Android system and the custom firmware running on top. For example, Samsung’s June 2026 patch alone fixed 45 different bugs, some of which were rated critical. Some holes can allow a thief who has pocketed your phone to slip past the lock screen or allow someone to use a code on your remote handset. Finally, what happens when you don’t update your Android phone gets worse when you are inactive for a long time.

        Nwz/Shutterstock People tend to associate expiration dates with the perishables in their fridges, not the phones in their pockets.
