Suunto recently announced a bunch of new features as part of their Q2 update, including both firmware updates for the watches, and updates to their app platform\/platform.<\/p>\n

Getting into the hardware side first, this is for the Suunto Race 2 & Suunto Vertical 2 only. This is a slight change from last years updates which have been widely supported by older models, while Race 2 & Vertical 2 came out less than a year ago. It’s not clear if this is a clear trend going forward for Suunto (probably), or just a one-off. This will be more in line with Garmin’s handling of things, as well as the latest Wahoo. While COROS tends to support things backwards (like the latest June 2026 firmware update that goes back to previous generation units).<\/p>\n

In any case, here’s what’s new in the watch’s firmware:<\/p>\n

– Maps get simple water feature labels
– Maps get mountain height labels
– Maps get layer selection option (including layers of contour lines, place names, street labels, and POI listings)
– Expanded route storage, from 15 to 200 routes (#@$@# finally!)
– Adds a target for vertical gain training (target for climbing in vertical meters)
– Adds a wave forecast feature
– Adds option to match QR code
– Increase the sync speed of new SuuntoPlus apps by compressing them<\/p>\n

Above, in the header image, you can see an example of the new layers option that allows you to turn various tidbits on or off on the map. Meanwhile, below are targets that go up for vertical gain from within a specific workout.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the weather forecast, this appears in the Suunto app and is synced to the device. Some companies have a permanent database that is stored locally, while others synchronize it from an application. This requires a close application. I wish it was more clear in the title of Tides what city it is from. Obviously, the waves where I am in Mallorca (Spain) are very different from those in the Basque Country to the north. In this case, I know these are the waves in my area, but if I really cared about the waves (and because of that, I’m probably on a boat), I’d like to know that they were right in my area, not yesterday’s place far away.<\/p>\n

Next, from an application perspective, there are a few new things there:<\/p>\n

– Added a new option to colorize 3D maps (eg, to see steep parts)
– Added a new type of map (City Map), making buildings with 3d style
– New sharing layers and domains to share completed tasks with friends (eg power\/distance\/etc.)
– Updated layout in profile details to show badges and personal records<\/p>\n

Here’s an example of the new shading and city maps:<\/p>\n

Finally, last week there were some updates for the Suunto Ocean, from a dive perspective:<\/p>\n

– Added CCR mode (as in EON’s)
– Added support for multiple tank pods
– Added new TTS values
– Added heart rate belt support
– Bug fixes on the map<\/p>\n

Now, as with previous Suunto releases, one of the programmers has put together a video that walks through all of these features, step by step.<\/p>\n

Do you have all that? Good.<\/p>\n

As always, it’s good to see Suunto keeping up with its quarterly releases, following the most recent one in April. We’ve seen many companies in this space join that pattern over the past year or two, albeit with varying levels of intensity. This time, Suunto discontinued both the Suunto Race 1 and Suunto Race S, which received April updates (the Vertical 1 did not receive April updates, but it did receive January updates). No doubt, that will give some people pause for thought going forward. Unfortunately, it’s too soon to know that ‘this model year only’ will become the new norm for software updates.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, if you have a Suunto 2 or Vertical 2 racer, go out and review it! The updates were released today, but as always, it may take a short while before all watches receive the update.<\/p>\n
