Fitbit and Pixel Watch users should now sync normally, although delayed data may take longer to appear. The article below was published while the end was in progress.

Google has confirmed a widespread outage of Google Health that prevents devices from syncing and pairing. The problem affects all Google Health users, while parts of the company’s Health Coach service are also unavailable.

The company’s official status dashboard shows the end of the Sync/Device Pairing service. Google says the incident began at 04:20 PDT on July 15, although it did not publicly acknowledge the problem until 05:41 PDT.

The dashboard currently describes the incident as “Sync not working for all users.” Google did not give an estimated time to restore the service.

Google confirms it’s a server-side problem

This doesn’t seem to be a single Bluetooth or phone related issue.

Google says the outage affects sync functionality for all Google Health users. Its status dashboard continues to show the Mobile App and Web API as available, suggesting that the problem resides within the systems responsible for connecting devices and transferring their data.

A recent update at 07:50 PDT expanded the list of affected features. Google has confirmed that Health Coach Ask and Shortcuts are also unavailable. Some parts of the Google Health app may continue to work, but users may see older information because their latest wearable data is not yet available.

The outage comes during Google’s broader transition from the Fitbit app and services to the new Google Health platform. There is no evidence that the migration caused today’s problem, however, and Google did not explain what caused the outage.

Users report missing sleep data and pairing failures

Reports from users began to appear on Reddit shortly after the outage began.

Some users say their devices won’t sync. Others report missing sleep logs or trackers that appear to be disconnected from their phones. One user said they reset their Pixel Watch before realizing the problem was affecting Google services instead of their individual devices.

Someone reported that the Fitbit Air is not working and won’t reconnect. Health Coach users have also confirmed that they will not be able to use chat, such as Google’s latest status update.

A person identifying themselves as a member of the Google Health product team responded in a Reddit thread. They said the issue is on Google’s side and the company is working to fix it.

The outage follows a separate Pixel Watch software issue that caused some users to lose SpO2 and skin temperature data. Today’s incident is widespread because Google has identified the device sync infrastructure itself as the problem.

Do not reset or unpair your device

The best answer is to wait.

Because Google has confirmed a complete service outage, resetting the Fitbit or Pixel Watch is unlikely to solve the problem. It may cause a secondary problem by removing an otherwise active connection that cannot be restored while pairing is not available.

Users should also avoid uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Health app unless Google specifically recommends it. Signing out, clearing app data or removing wearables from the account can make recovery more difficult.

Your tracker or smart watch will still collect information while the cloud service is unavailable. However, that data may not be visible within Google Health until syncing is restarted. The amount of information stored may vary by device, so users should leave the wearable plugged in and charged.

Google has not said when it expects normal service to return. The status dashboard is still marking Sync / Device Pairing with a red off sign at the time of writing.

The outage comes one day after the Fitbit Air received its first firmware release. That update introduced several changes and fixes, which we’ve covered in our Fitbit Air Firmware update article.

Don’t miss the latest from gadgets and wearables

Subscribe to our monthly newsletter and check out our YouTube channel.

You can also follow Gadgets & Wearables on Google News and add it as a favorite source in Google search.

The post Fitbit doesn’t sync as Google Health ensures widespread rollout appeared first on Gadgets & Wearables.

Update: Google has restored the sync / device pairing service.
