OPPO recently introduced the UDP-205 and UDP-203, its latest 4K Blu-ray players that support advanced formats such as 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision. While both models excel in video performance, our focus today shifts to the exceptional two-channel audio capabilities of the UDP-205. OPPO has meticulously designed the UDP-205 for superior stereo sound, featuring the SABER ESS Technology ES9038PRO DAC chip and an exclusive balanced XLR output.<\/p>\n

This design caters specifically to discerning audiophiles who want high-fidelity two-channel playback.<\/p>\n

Taking Care of Audiophile Needs<\/h2>\n

The UDP-205 adopts a full-size chassis design, measuring 430mm in width, 311mm in depth, and 123mm in height, matching the standard size of two-channel high-end audio sources.<\/p>\n

Out of the box, a quick guide card highlights the key features, with special emphasis on the DAC chip, toroidal power supply, and balanced XLR output – all key components for exceptional audio performance.<\/p>\n

Inside the box, next to the main unit covered in a glossy black metal chassis with OPPO’s signature design, we find a user manual, warranty documents, and a box of accessories.<\/p>\n

The accessory box contains a standard power cable, an HDMI cable, and a rich light remote control.<\/p>\n

The front panel of the UDP-205, finished in black, features key controls including power, disc eject\/load, play, stop, pause, previous track, and next track. Notably, the headphone output allows for private listening, and the USB 2.0 port provides direct playback from USB drives.<\/p>\n

Variable Input and Output Options<\/h2>\n

The rear panel displays a complete list of inputs and outputs. The analog audio output is divided into two categories. At the top right, eight outputs cater for home theater systems, delivering 7.1 channel surround sound to compatible receivers. For the two-channel analog output, located on the top left, users can choose a single-ended RCA and a balanced XLR output.<\/p>\n

It’s important to note that only the UDP-205 provides equivalent XLR analog outputs; the UDP-203 is equipped with a dedicated RCA output.<\/p>\n

Digital signal inputs include coaxial, optical, and USB Type B, allowing the UDP-205 to function as a standalone DAC when connected to computers or other digital sources. Two USB 3.0 ports on the back facilitate playback from external hard drives. The HDMI input takes compatible video and audio sources.<\/p>\n

A wired network port on the bottom left allows the UDP-205 to act as a digital broadcast receiver, playing audio and video files from NAS devices or other UPnP-enabled sources on the network.<\/p>\n

Examining the thickness of the chassis in the previous photos reveals a solid build quality, a significant departure from the usual thin Blu-ray player designs. An internal inspection will soon confirm that this massive build is not just for show, but features genuine high-quality components.<\/p>\n

The Beauty of the Interior<\/h2>\n

Removing the top cover of the UDP-205 reveals a dense interior full of circuit boards and components. The disc transport mechanism sits in the center of the floor. A multi-channel audio circuit occupies the upper left quadrant, while a dedicated two-channel audio circuit is placed on the right. This physical separation emphasizes the UDP-205’s commitment to separate signal paths for multi-channel and two-channel audio processing.<\/p>\n

The toroidal power source is located on the left, with a black-box section behind it that houses the digital processing power supply.<\/p>\n

The UDP-205 has a heavy, double-layered speaker and large metal feet designed to effectively dampen external vibrations and dissipate internal resonances. The player uses a fanless, adaptive design and heatsinks strategically placed to maintain optimal operating temperatures.<\/p>\n

This dedicated toroidal converter specifically powers analog audio circuits, using multi-channel and dual-channel stages. The video and digital processing functions are powered by separate power supplies housed within a secure dark enclosure. This isolation of the power supply is an important design feature that emphasizes the analog audio performance focus of the UDP-205.<\/p>\n

The OPPO disc transporter is identified as the BDL-1601 model.<\/p>\n

Eight multi-channel analog circuits are visible. The UDP-205 includes two ES9038PRO DAC chips. One is dedicated to a multi-channel analog circuit, and the other is dedicated to a two-channel analog circuit. This clear DAC setting ensures a more direct and pure signal path when listening to pure two-channel audio.<\/p>\n

A two-channel analog circuit board is filled with many large and small capacitors. The central part is the ES9038PRO DAC chip.<\/p>\n

The UDP-205 uses the SABER ESS Technology ES9038PRO DAC chip, the flagship of the ESS PRO series. This chip is capable of achieving a differential range of up to 140dB in 32-bit, 8-channel operation.<\/p>\n

ELNA capacitors are used in all audio circuitry.<\/p>\n

The analog circuit behind the DAC chip is a balanced design. Three different signaling pathways are evident. The center path feeds a single-ended RCA analog output, while the left and right paths provide dedicated signal paths for each channel’s balanced XLR analog output.<\/p>\n

Wider Format Support for Enhanced Listening<\/h2>\n

Placing the UDP-205 in my audio rack and turning it on, this is the display displayed during CD playback. It indicates the disc type and, for SACDs, will display \u201cSACD.\u201d Important information includes track number and playing time.<\/p>\n

OPPO gamers are famous for their perfect gaming capabilities. The UDP-205 provides extensive support for various discs and file formats. Beyond the latest UHD Blu-ray discs, it carries standard Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, DVD, DVD-Audio, SACD, and standard CDs.<\/p>\n

The front USB port allows direct connection of USB drives. Music files stored on the drive can be accessed and played directly, without the need for special software, using the on-screen menu system.<\/p>\n

When you insert the USB drive, it appears in the on-screen menu. \u201cKINGSTON\u201d is the name of my USB drive, and \u201cAudio Compass 2017\u201d is the CD in the disc player currently. Users can easily select their desired playback source.<\/p>\n

Playing a 2x DSD music file on a USB drive, all relevant music information is displayed. The display of album art depends on the presence of the image file within the music file folder; if available, it will be displayed.<\/p>\n

With the UDP-205 connected to my network via Ethernet, it can also access UPnP-compatible devices on the same network, such as NAS drives.<\/p>\n

Selecting \u201cNetwork\u201d from the main menu displays accessible devices, including NAS drives and computers on the network with shared folders.<\/p>\n

Navigating the NAS drive shows all the internal audio and video file folders.<\/p>\n

Playback of various music file formats went well, reflecting the wide compatibility of the UDP-205 file format. This is a dff DSD file.<\/p>\n
