What we mean by that is, well-known French manufacturers Focal have just introduced their new Scala Utopia Evo M loudspeakers, which are said to be (in their own words) “a major evolution of the iconic model” in their Utopia line. Specifically, the Scala Utopia Evo M speakers feature two key new features – namely, the PRISM tweeter and the M-profile W midrange – so let’s dive deeper into what both of these developments mean.

First, let’s look inside. The Scala Utopia Evo M speakers have adopted the M-profile midrange from the Utopia Main professional series, which includes a reinforced 5″ W-cone with a sandwich structure and a one-piece M-profile geometry. This design combination is said to “guarantee” exceptional stiffness, ultra-linear frequency response, and very low Massspension TMD® and features very low distortion of Mass®. neodymium magnet, and 80mm voice coil.

As for the inverted-dome PRISM 1 1/16 ″ M-profile tweeter – also recently introduced in the company’s Diva Alta Utopia model – it sports a high-frequency cone based on the combination of many materials and an advanced micro-structuring process that is said to reach a higher degree of rigidity than beryllium light, while retaining the brightness of beryllium.

Equipped with IAL2 (Infinite Acoustic Loading) technology, the PRISM (short for Photon-Refined Intelligent Structured Membrane) tweeter offers bandwidth specifications of up to 40kHz, and a ringing frequency of 528Hz.

The Scala Utopia Evo M ‘TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) speaker setup is said to have limited cone deformation and reduce distortion to “maintain flexibility and sound definition,” and its 6 5/16″ W woofer includes a 16cm dual-ferrite motor.

Also on board is OPC+ (Optimum Phase Crossover), which is said to allow “precise” adjustment of bass and treble to suit the surrounding listening environment, as well as Gamma and Focus Time technologies aimed at “exemplary” temporal uniformity and mechanical stability.

Scala Utopia Evo M is available in five levels. Three of them are premium lacquer (Black High Gloss, Off White High Gloss, and Warm Taupe High Gloss; the latter shown above), and two of them are wood (Light Walnut with Off White front panel, and Dark Walnut with Sepia Brown front panel).

The wood cabinet of the Scala Utopia Evo M speakers is made by the company’s cabinet makers in Burgundy, France, while the drivers are made in their workshops in Saint-Étienne, France.

Focal suggests that the Utopia Evol M speakers can be thought of as “the heart of a complete hi-fi system” and are the perfect partners for amplifying and broadcasting Naim’s systems — particularly the Naim 200 and 300 Series and the Naim Uniti Nova PE models.

The Scala Utopia Evo M speakers will be available from August 2026.
