Your sleep schedule is off, workouts happen less often than you expected, and by the time August rolls around, you’re feeling it. You have a plan to get back on track when the school year starts and your days have more structure, but you know how that usually goes. The first two weeks are tough, after that the routine is quietly smooth.

A fitness tracker won’t get you off your couch. What you will do is put a number in front of you every day, making it clear whether you are sticking to your goal or lax. That small appearance is often the difference between the meaning of doing and the actual doing. Back-to-school season is a great time to shop, since you’re already resetting more than one part of your schedule, and the overlap makes the habit even more sticky. To keep the odds in your favor, here are three fitness trackers that can help you stay accountable and reach your goals.

Xiaomi Smart Band 10: Data only, no strings attached

Xiaomi

Benefits

Evil

It is very affordable with no ongoing fees

There is no training or translation layer

21-day battery life

The accompanying app is clunky

It tracks steps, sleep, heart rate, blood oxygen, and stress

GPS depends on your phone, so you can’t leave it behind

It includes 150+ game modes

No blood pressure, ECG, or Afib detection

Wide device compatibility

Xiaomi Smart Band 10 gives you numbers and nothing else. No training, no interpretation, and no upsell waiting behind a paywall. It tracks steps, sleep, heart rate, blood oxygen, and stress levels, and displays it clearly.

What you pay upfront, about $47, is what you’ll ever pay. There is no degree to graduate from, even if you wanted to. That’s a real advantage if all you want is accountability, not a dashboard full of details you don’t care about.

A 21-day battery life means it fades back to almost your entire course, and the 1.72-inch AMOLED display is always perfect for a quick glance during a run. The tracker includes more than 150 sports modes, more than you will actually use, and can survive the trees and rain with its 5ATM water resistance rating. It’s also compatible with Android 8+ and iOS 12+ devices, which is wide enough to work with phones a few years old.

Xiaomi’s compatible app is a weak, soft spot next to Google or WHOOP’s polish, and the GPS runs on your phone instead of anything built into the band. If you’re deciding between this and something that costs twice or four times as much, know that the extra money will buy you more data points and insights that help you make sense of the numbers and train more efficiently. Buy this if basic tracking is all you want.

Google Fitbit Air: Comprehensive tracking, training when you want

Google

Benefits

Evil

Priority tracking works without registration

Battery life is limited to 7 days

It automatically detects basic workouts

Full AI training requires a $9.99/month subscription

$99.99 for a 3-month free trial to evaluate Health Coach

There is no screen, all data stays in the app

Quick charging adds a full day of battery life in five minutes

No ECG or blood pressure monitoring

Free tracking of interruptions

Fitbit Air tracks more data points than the Xiaomi Smart Band 10. It supports steps, sleep, heart rate, SpO2, and stress levels, tracks heart rate fluctuations and screens for Afib, and automatically identifies workouts such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling, with many types of activity available for manual entry. All of that is covered in valuable information with no registration required. Above that is the real difference.

Google Health Coach, a feature powered by Gemini, can turn those numbers into actionable data, tailoring recommendations based on your training and recovery. It’s available if you want it, not forced if you don’t. At $99.99, that combo makes sense if you want more than just raw data. Every unit ships with a three-month trial of Google Health Premium, so you can test the training for yourself before deciding whether it’s worth the $9.99/month subscription.

The tracker itself is a screenless gem that attaches to interchangeable bands, small enough to forget you’re wearing it. The 7-day battery life is a significant trade-off, although the Fitbit Air supports fast charging and a five-minute charge adds enough juice to last a full day.

Fitbit Air is compatible with Android 11+ and iOS 16.4+, so it will work with most phones, and switching phones later won’t disable it. Buy this if you want more data than Xiaomi offers, with the option of paying AI to translate it for you.

WHOOP 5.0: Information is not selective

WHOOP

Benefits

Evil

Automatically detects 50+ job types

There is no free tier, the hardware does not work without an active membership

The Daily Return Score provides specific, determined guidance

The cheapest plan runs for $199/year

Two week battery life

There is no screen, everything needs to check the app

A WHOOP trainer provides information where needed

ECG and blood pressure data are locked behind the most expensive tier at $359/year

The Life tier adds ECG and blood pressure information

WHOOP doesn’t offer a version that just gives you raw numbers. There is no free tier, and the membership fee is what unlocks the hardware in the first place. Stop paying, and the band stops recording. Translation is the whole product here.

Entry One, a $199/year plan, ships with the standard WHOOP 5.0 tracker and includes sleep, stress, and recovery tracking. It automatically detects more than 50 types of activities, from running and weight lifting to swimming and yoga, collating each into a daily Strain score. You also get WHOOP Coach, an AI-generated feature that answers questions about your training and recovery using your biometric data.

If you want more, the Peak plan runs for $239/year. It comes with the same hardware, but adds Healthspan, Stress Monitor, and Health Monitor. The Life plan costs $359 a year and is interchangeable with the WHOOP MG sensor, which enables ECG, Afib detection, and blood pressure data.

Battery life is a real strength at 14+ days and, like the Fitbit, there’s no screen at all, so you’ll have to rely on the companion app to track your progress. The WHOOP app requires iOS 17+ and works on all modern Android phones, although older Android devices may have connection issues. Buy Tier One if you’ve decided the training is worth the annual bill, not a one-time purchase, and upgrade later only if you find yourself looking for deeper metrics.

If none of these are correct

The three trackers above are designed for one job: fitness data, with or without interpretation. If what you really want is a smartwatch that can handle texts, calls, and apps, or you don’t want anything on your wrist, these three should be considered instead.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 (starts at $349.99): This is the right choice if you want a smartwatch first and a fitness tracker second. It runs Wear OS and puts your phone’s main functions in the palm of your hand, supported by Gemini for smart suggestions. You also get all basic fitness and workout tracking, as well as an ECG. On the other hand, battery life tops out at around 30 to 40 hours, so overnight charging is non-negotiable, and it costs a pretty penny.

Apple Watch SE 3 (starts at $249): For iPhone users who already live within the Apple ecosystem, this is an obvious buy. Notifications, apps, Crash and Fall Detection are all available. Skip the ECG and SpO2 to reach that price point, and battery life is 18 hours, shorter than all the other devices on this list. It only makes sense if you already own an iPhone, otherwise, you’re buying into the wrong ecosystem.

RingConn Gen 2 Air ($199): If you don’t like the idea of wearing a band to sleep, this one’s for you. A smart ring with a 10-day battery, detailed sleep tracking, HRV, breathing rate tracking, and blood oxygen monitoring, all without registration. However, fitness tracking is lacking, with no GPS and limited workout tracking.

None of these devices will fix your sleep schedule or get you to the gym. They will make it a little harder to lie to yourself about whether you tried. Choose the one that fits your budget and your patience for being told what to do, and go from there.

Summer break did what it usually does.
