The Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600 is a reasonably priced smart TRV that adds Matter and a few more bells and whistles to the aging E1. It’s smartly designed, quick to install, and offers a logical choice between Matter over Thread and Aqara’s rich Zigbee setup. Run within the Aqara ecosystem proves to be reliable and truly useful. At the other end of the market are full heating platforms from companies like Tado and Honeywell that want to manage your entire system.<\/p>\n On the other hand there are smart thermostats that do more than save you trips to the thermostat.<\/p>\n The Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600 positions itself between these two extremes.<\/p>\n Brands like TP-Link, Netatmo, and Shelly offer similarly priced TRVs, but none yet match the W600 when it comes to Matter support. <\/p>\n Advertisement <\/p>\n<\/section>\n What Aqara offers here is a room temperature controller that works outside of your boiler, combined with Matter over Thread compatibility like Eve Thermo, but at a significantly lower cost.<\/p>\n Read on for my full Aqara W600 review\u2026<\/p>\n From a design perspective, the W600 is clearly a step forward from the E1, which went on sale in 2022. <\/p>\n It looks more refined and more confident, more like high-end options like Tado than a budget supplement.<\/p>\n Advertisement <\/p>\n<\/section>\n The matte white casing looks clean on the radiator, and the front display is sharp and easy to read. <\/p>\n Temperature and condition icons are clearly displayed, and the screen can be rotated for constant readability regardless of how the unit is mounted.<\/p>\n Manual control is handled by twisting the body of the thermostat, with an additional button at the top. That button is one of the design’s weak points. A different media combination is unheard of, and tasks like factory reset often send me back to the manual to double-check which sequence was required.<\/p>\n Installation, thankfully, is very easy. Aqara includes a large selection of valve adapters in the box, supporting M30x1.5 and a wide range of common fittings. <\/p>\n The mounting hardware is metal rather than plastic, which feels solid and arguably better than what more expensive competitors offer.<\/p>\n Advertisement <\/p>\n<\/section>\n Replacing an existing Tado TRV with the W600 took less than five minutes once the correct adapter was in place. After installation, the thermostat uses automatic calibration to learn the valve’s range of motion. This process can also be activated manually from the app if needed.<\/p>\n The Aqara app guides you through everything clearly, complete with diagrams. Power is provided by two AA batteries, accessed by removing the outer shell. <\/p>\n One word of caution here. The internal LEDs are extremely bright when exposed, so avoid looking directly at them. This is also where you will find both Matter and Aqara QR codes.<\/p>\n Advertisement <\/p>\n<\/section>\n A standout feature of the W600, as is now common across the range of Aqara devices, is its dual-protocol approach. <\/p>\n You can use it as a Matter over Thread device or as a Zigbee device within the Aqara ecosystem. You must choose one or the other, and only one protocol can be active at any given time.<\/p>\n By default, the W600 ships configured for Thread. Switching to Zigbee involves a protocol switching process that takes about five minutes. The same applies if you later want to go back, and it requires a reset initiated by double-tapping and holding the button for ten seconds.<\/p>\n When operating in Thread mode, the W600 can be added directly to platforms such as Apple Home or Amazon Alexa using a compatible Matter controller and a Thread border router, such as an Apple TV or Echo speaker.<\/p>\n Advertisement <\/p>\n<\/section>\n It can also be added via the Aqara app if you have an Aqara M3 hub that works as a border router. Even in serial mode, the Aqara app provides a complete experience.<\/p>\n Zigbee mode unlocks the full range of Aqara features though. These include window detection, adaptive programming behavior, child lock, anti-frost controls, and deep integration with Aqara sensors. <\/p>\n An Aqara Zigbee hub is required, but for existing Aqara users this is where the W600 really shines.<\/p>\n The thermostat supports Aqara temperature and humidity sensors, such as the T1, the W100 Climate Sensor, or the FP300 multi-sensor, which I used during testing. <\/p>\n Advertisement <\/p>\n<\/section>\n When paired, you can choose whether the W600 relies on its internal or external sensor, which is useful if the placement of the radiator interferes with the temperature reading. Temperature calibration is available for further adjustment.<\/p>\n Temperature adjustments are made in 0.5 degree steps. Changes made in the Aqara app or through connected home platforms appear on the thermostat itself after a pause. The delay is noticeable but not frustrating.<\/p>\n In terms of sound, the W600 is unremarkable. The Aqara averages less than 30dB, and in practice it sounds very similar to the Tado TRV. You will hear the whirr of soft machinery, but it probably won’t disturb your sleep unless you are very sensitive.<\/p>\n Programming within the Aqara app allows up to seven sessions per day, with different profiles available if you have multiple devices installed. <\/p>\n Advertisement <\/p>\n<\/section>\n Another annoyance is that changes made to third-party platforms don’t always sync back to the Aqara app, which can make it difficult to tell which schedule is active.<\/p>\n The window detection worked reliably during the test, reacting correctly to the rapid drop in temperature. A child lock is included for homes with small children, and frost protection is automatically enabled to prevent damage during cold spells.<\/p>\n It is important to remember that this is not a full heating system. The W600 has no direct connection to your boiler. It can only provide heat when the boiler is already running due to demand elsewhere. <\/p>\n If you use a smart thermostat to control your boiler, automation can fill the gap. Setting the W600 to a certain temperature may also trigger your main thermostat to turn on the heating.<\/p>\n Advertisement <\/p>\n<\/section>\n Most of my testing was done in Zigbee mode using an Aqara M3 hub. With a strong Aqara Zigbee network in place, reliability was excellent and I experienced no dropouts. Matter over Thread performance was generally good as well, supported by many Eero devices acting as Thread border routers.<\/p>\n That said, I’ve seen the W600 show up as heating on Apple Home when no heat is being delivered. Removing and reinserting the batteries solved the problem, but it’s not something you want to deal with all the time.<\/p>\n A room sync feature is available to connect multiple W600 units in the same location, but with only one device available, I wasn’t able to test this functionality.<\/p>\n The Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600 excels when used as part of a comprehensive Aqara setup. In Zigbee mode it’s reliable, flexible, and really useful for controlling heating on a room-by-room basis.
